3 Best Ways to Free Storage on Fire TV Stick

By default, the new Fire TV Stick or Fire TV Stick 4K comes with 8 GB of internal storage. Of this 8 GB built-in storage, only about 5 to 6 GB is available to users for installing applications, downloading files, and other activities. When the storage of the streaming stick becomes low, you may have problems installing new applications. In this guide, we will explain three (3) ways to free up storage space on a Fire TV key.

Some Fire TV Stick users have reported slow streaming performance and other issues when their streaming stick ran out of storage space. Some have also reported a constant “Extremely low storage level” error message on their TV screens.

You don’t have to wait for your Fire TV Stick to display a low storage warning before freeing up storage space on the device. You can occasionally check the storage status of the delivery key to determine how much built-in storage you have used and the available capacity. Here’s how to check storage on a Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick 4K.

How to free up storage space on Fire TV Stick

There are many ways to free up storage space on your Fire TV Stick. Check them.

1. Uninstall unused applications

The apps you install from Amazon Appstore take up a significant portion of the Fire TV Stick storage. If your Fire TV Stick runs out of storage space, you need to uninstall the apps you’re barely using. You should also find and uninstall the apps you have never used before.

Note: You cannot uninstall native Amazon apps (Amazon Music, Alexa Shopping, etc.) that come preinstalled with the Fire TV Stick.

To uninstall an application on the Fire TV Stick, follow the steps below.

Step 1: Launch the Fire TV Stick Settings menu and select Applications.

This will uninstall the application, delete its cache data, as well as its associated files stored on your Fire TV Stick, thus freeing up space on the device.

2. Clear data and application cache

When you use the Fire TV Stick apps, they create background cache files and other data that fill your device’s storage. You should consider clearing an application’s cache and data if you want to free up storage space but don’t want to uninstall the application.

Before continuing, you should note that deleting data from an application will reset the application to the factory, that is, it will return the application to the state it was in when it was first installed. This means that you will lose account information, saved passwords, personalization, custom settings, etc. Clearing the cache, however, will only delete temporary and unimportant data from the application.

Note: You can clear the cache and data of the preinstalled Fire TV Stick applications.

Follow the steps below to clear the data or cache of an application on your Fire TV Stick.

Step 1: Launch the Fire TV Stick Settings menu and select Applications.

Repeat the same for as many applications as you want and check your Fire TV storage to see how much space you have freed up.

3. Reset the Fire TV key

When you reset your Fire TV Stick, the device will return to the state it was in when you unpacked it. Resetting the Fire TV Stick will delete all apps from the device and will also delete all files consuming the device’s storage space. While this would free up storage space on your Fire TV Stick, you should note that the factory reset will delete all personal data, unlink your Amazon account, and you will need to configure the device from scratch.

Resetting to defaults can help resolve many Fire TV Stick issues. However, it is advisable to perform a factory reset to free up storage space only when methods # 1 and # 2 do not work.
