A Guide to Creating and Managing Contact Groups on Samsung Phones

We organize our notes, documents, files and the like on our phones. But the same thought of organizing contacts rarely crosses our minds. If you are one of the few people who want to group and organize contacts, Samsung phones provide an amazing experience. Contact grouping makes it easy to contact a specific group of people. Where to find contact groups on Samsung phones

You will find the contact groups function in the Samsung Contacts and Phone app. Open the Samsung Phone app and tap the Contacts tab at the bottom. Scroll down a bit and you’ll have groups. Tap it to view, create and edit groups.

You can also open the Contacts app. Tap the three bar icon. Expand Groups to reveal the existing groups and create a group.

How to create new contact groups

Samsung offers a few predefined groups that cannot be deleted or renamed. These include Family, Emergency Contacts, Favorites in Android, and Unassigned. You can add contacts to these groups if the name suits you or create your own.

There are two ways to create a group. You can do this from the Contacts app or the Phone app. In the Phone app, go to the Contacts tab and tap on Groups, as shown in the section above. Press the Create button at the top to create a new group.

Assign a group name in the available box. Choose a ringtone if you want to set a ringtone for the group. You can change it later. Tap Add member and choose the contacts you want to add to the particular group. Press the Save button.

Otherwise, open the Contacts app and tap on the three bar icon. Tap Create group under Groups. Add group name and add contacts using Add member option.

How to add or remove members from contact groups

There are three ways to do this. First, you can add members while you are creating a group, as shown above. Apart from that, here are two other methods.

Method 1: by editing a group

Members can be added or removed when you edit a group. To do this, open the group from the Contacts or Phone app, as described in the Where to find groups section. Tap the group you want to edit. Tap the Edit icon in the group. Tap the Add member option to add a contact. To delete a member, tap the red delete icon (-) next to the member. Tap Save to save the changes.

Pro tip: To add the same contact to multiple groups, open the groups and add them as a member.

Method 2: from individual contacts

You can assign a group to a contact when editing individual contacts. To do this, open any contact in the Contacts or Phone app that you want to add to a group. Press the Edit button.

The edit contacts screen opens. Look for the Groups option. Tap it and choose an existing group. Go back and tap Save.

Pro tip: You can add a contact to multiple groups. To do this, check the boxes next to multiple groups.

Pro tip: If a group of your choice does not exist, you can also create a new group from an individual contact, as shown in the screenshot above.

Likewise, if you’ve assigned a group to a contact and want to delete it, open the contact. Tap the Edit icon.

How to check assigned groups

Often you want to check if a contact is added to a group or not. You can do this in two ways. Open the group. Use the search icon to search for a contact if the group has many contacts.

The method mentioned above is a bit tedious if a contact belongs to more than one group. The other method is therefore to open the contact directly from the Contact or Phone application. You will see the assigned groups in the Groups section. If no group is assigned to the contact, you will not see the Group option.

How to change the group name and ringtone

For groups that you have created yourself, you can rename them at any time. However, group names created by Samsung cannot be changed. To rename a group, open the group and tap the Edit icon. Enter a new name. On the same screen, you can add, delete or edit a ringtone for the group. The same ringtone will be used for all group members.

How to send a text or an email to all the contacts in the group

One of the best benefits of creating groups in Samsung is sending a bulk text or email. To do this, open the required group from the Contacts or Phone app, as shown above. Tap the three dots icon. Select Send message or Send e-mail. Add your message and send it. The message or email will be sent to all contacts in that group.

How to delete a group

To delete a contact group that you created on your Samsung phone, open the group. Tap the three dots icon. Select Remove from it. You will be asked if you want to delete only the group or delete both the group and its members. Select the first option if you do not want to delete the contacts from your phone. Go with the second if you want to delete contacts in bulk.
