A Guide to Setting Up and Using Samsung Edge Panel

Samsung started the trend of curved edge panels with the launch of the Galaxy Note Edge in 2014. With this, the company introduced the Edge panel software to take advantage of the curved screen on Galaxy devices. Over the years, the curved screen has gone from an aggressive mess to a minimal implementation. Samsung has improved the Edge Panel add-on to such an extent that every other phone maker is trying to emulate it.

The Google Play Store is packed with third-party Edge panel copiers, but nothing comes close to a native out-of-the-box implementation. With the latest One UI 3.1, the Edge panel is still just as powerful and feature rich as ever. And the good news is, it’s no longer limited to high-end Galaxy devices.

Read on to learn how to set up and use the Edge panel like a pro on Samsung phones. That said, the edge panel is still limited to a handful of Galaxy phones.

The Edge panel is tucked away on the right or left side of the screen. You can recognize it by a transparent white bar. Just drag it to the Samsung home screen and you will be able to access your apps, contacts, tools, clipboard, etc. the most used.

Customizing the dashboard

Before we start with the features of the Edge panel and dig deep, let’s change the default look and size of the Edge panel. By default, it’s pinned to the right edge of the home screen and features a white color with some transparency.

Samsung, being Samsung, allows you to change all aspects of it. Follow the steps below to make the relevant changes.

Step 1: Open the Settings menu on your Galaxy device.

2nd step: Go to the View menu.

Step 3: Scroll down and tap the Edge panels.

Step 4: Go to the Handle menu and you will see all the possible options to customize the Edge panels.

Step 5: You can change the default position from right to left. Lock the position of the handle.

If you are using your left hand with the phone, you may want to change the Edge panel from the right side to the left side.

You can also play around with dozens of color options to change the appearance of the panel indicator. If you are using a white wallpaper, it makes sense to change the color from white to something else.

Samsung also offers an option to play with the transparency and size of the panel indicator. Users can customize the size, position, color, and transparency of the indicator in the Edge panel.

Add, remove and manage dashboards

By default, Samsung offers the most used apps and contacts as two top Edge panels. However, you can change that and add as many Edge panels to the sidebar. Here is how to do it.

Step 1: Swipe up and open the Edge panel.

2nd step: Click on the small Settings menu.

Step 3: Here you can see apps, contacts, smart selection, tasks, weather, tools, reminder, and clipboard.

You can enable these Edge panels according to your preferences. You can also tap the Edit option at the bottom and edit each panel.

For example, you can select Edit from the Apps menu and select the apps you want handy. You can create two applications and even integrate files into the dashboard.

To rearrange the edge panels, you can either long press on an edge panel and move their positions from the next menu. You can also tap the three-dot menu in the upper right corner and select the Rearrange option.

Edge panels aren’t limited to default choices only. You can also download the relevant Edge panels from the Galaxy store. Follow the steps below to download them.

Step 1: Swipe up and open the Edge panel.

Step 3: Select Galaxy Store at the bottom.

You can view and install third-party Edge panels like Calculator Panel, Direct Call Panel, Now Playing, Calendar Panel, Voice Recorder, Notes, etc. There are also several paid options. You will surely come across something that you prefer and love.

If you are not a fan of the Edge Panel and accidentally find yourself opening the menu all the time, you can turn the feature off completely. Follow the steps to turn off the Edge panel on Samsung devices.

Step 1: Open the Settings menu on your Galaxy device.
