How to Auto-Delete Emails in Gmail
Gmail is the world’s most popular email provider. The service is provided by default on all Android devices. In 2020, the messaging experience isn’t just about receiving emails from your business or bank. Today, consumers receive marketing emails, newsletters, and promotional offers from dozens of email providers. It becomes difficult to filter important emails and you may need to delete some unwanted emails. But the process can be long and irritating. Fortunately, Gmail allows you to automatically delete emails.
There are several reasons to delete unwanted emails in Gmail. First of all, by keeping your inbox clean, you can find relevant emails quickly and easily. Google counts Gmail space against 15 GB of basic Google Drive storage. After a few years, your Gmail inbox will fill up with thousands of emails that take up a fair amount of storage in Gmail. If you go over the 15GB storage, you’ll have to go with the Google One subscription plans.
In this article, we’ll explain how to automatically delete emails in Gmail and cover other tips to improve your Gmail experience. Let’s start.
Automatically delete emails in Gmail
Most newsletters and marketing companies offer a small unsubscribe button to unsubscribe from their mailing list. But the practice takes time because you have to go to every company email, find that little unsubscribe button, and confirm the action from another window. We have an even better solution. Use Gmail filters.
Gmail offers filters to automatically manage incoming emails. Using filters, you can create a set of rules for organizing email. Here we will create a filter to automatically delete emails from Gmail. Follow the steps below.
Step 1: Open Gmail on the web and sign in using your Google Account credentials.
2nd step: From the Gmail inbox screen, tap the “Settings” icon in the upper right corner.
Step 3: From the Gmail Settings screen, go to the Filters & Blocked Addresses tab.
Step 4: Here you will see the list of filters you have created. Scroll down and select the “Create a new filter” option.
Step 5: Enter the email address you want to automatically delete downstream, ignore the other options and select Create Filter at the bottom.
Step 6: From the next menu you can select a bunch of options. Since we are talking about the automatic deletion feature, select the Delete option.
Step 7: Tap the Create filter at the bottom.
You can create as many filters as you want. Gmail will automatically remove these incoming emails from the added email addresses.
Gmail also allows you to create a filter directly from the email details menu. Open any email you want to automatically delete, tap the three-dot menu and select Filter messages as this option. The filters menu will open and you can create a filter for the email address from there.
Use the Email Studio add-on in Gmail
There is a limitation with Gmail filters. It only works on new incoming emails. You can’t set up a filter in Gmail that will automatically remove all old newsletters and promotional emails from your mailbox. Or a separate filter that will apply a different label to emails after a certain number of days and mark them as read. Enter a third-party Gmail add-on called Email Studio.
Email Studio is a Gmail add-on that helps you keep your inbox clean and clutter-free with the auto-purge feature. Follow the steps below to configure the service from scratch.
Step 1: Download and install the Email Studio add-on using the download link below.
2nd step: You’ll find the add-on right next to the Gmail home screen.
Step 3: Tap on Email Studio and tap on Email Clean Up option.
Step 4: Email Studio will ask you for a bunch of permissions to work properly with your Gmail inbox. Allow them.
Step 5: The add-on will open a separate window for you to create filters.
Step 6: Email Studio offers a bunch of options. Here we are going to talk about the Email Clean Up feature. Go to the Clean menu at the top.
The interface is similar to Gmail filters, but the functions are more advanced. You can create a rule name, add the email address, and then select the timeline of received emails.
After adding the necessary details, select the action you want Email Studio to take. Select “Send to trash” and save the filter.
For example, in the screenshot above, I created a filter to send emails from a particular email address to the trash. Gmail automatically deletes the recycle bin after 30 days.
