How to Change Netflix Download Location on Windows 10 PC

One of the biggest advantages of streaming apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime is that you can download movies and TV shows to watch them offline. Windows 10 app for Netflix is ​​no different. Similar to its smartphone counterpart, it lets you easily download movies, TV shows, and documentaries (see Best War Documentaries on Netflix). By default, the Netflix app for Windows 10 installs on drive C of your PC. And if you download a lot of content regularly, you may run out of storage sooner than you think.

When it comes to Netflix downloads, every title you download for offline viewing takes up space on your PC’s (and even your phone’s) internal storage. So if you’re used to downloading a lot of shows, you might end up seeing the player’s storage situation turn red in Explorer.

Fortunately, you can change the Netflix download location in Windows 10 PC. And the best part is that it doesn’t take long.

Again, you should keep in mind that you will not be able to directly access the downloaded files on your Windows PC. You’ll have to follow the same old way of accessing it via the Downloads section of the Netflix app.

How to change Netflix download location on Windows 10 PC

Step 1: Open Settings on your Windows 10 PC and go to Applications> Applications and Features, then find Netflix in the drop-down list.

2nd step: Once you have located it, press the Move button and select the location where you want to move the Netflix. In my case, I chose to go with a removable USB key.

However, you need to make sure that the new location, which could be a partition or a new drive, has enough space.

After that click on Move, and that’s it. Depending on the number of downloads you already have on your system, this process may take some time, and until then you will not be able to use Netflix.

Fortunately, you can connect to Netflix from browsers like Chrome or Edge Chromium and continue your binge eating activities.

Step 3: Once the process is complete, you will be able to see that all of the Netflix related folders have been moved to the new location. However, folders like WindowsApps will not be accessible.

The only limitation of this whole process is that you cannot select a specific sub-folder in the new drive. The folders will be created at the default root.

Note that if you have chosen an external hard drive or USB drive as the new location for Netflix downloads, you must have the said device with you whenever you want to stream movies or TV shows. Without the device, Netflix will display an “Unable to open” error.

1. Smart downloads

Want your downloads to be smart? Well, Netflix has a nifty feature aptly named Smart Downloads that automatically downloads episodes of shows.

For example, if you watch The Big Bang Theory again and smart download is enabled, the app will automatically download episode 3 when you’re done watching episode 2. Cool, right?

What makes the case even more pleasant is that the old watched episodes are deleted automatically.

To activate smart downloads, tap the hamburger menu in the upper left corner and select My Downloads.

Then flip the switch for smart downloads. Once done, you will see the option at the top of the Downloads page.

2. Delete all downloads

Want to save space on your PC by deleting old downloads? Simple, click the small Delete icon in the Netflix settings.

3. Manage download devices

There are many rules for downloading Netflix content. While there is the common “Download expired” message for older downloads, the most annoying is the “Too many devices” error.

It appears when you have downloaded titles to multiple devices or profiles. And the worst part is that you can’t download a title unless it’s deleted from the other device / profile.

But don’t worry, there is a quick fix for this.

Go to your account settings (upper left corner) and select Manage download devices under Settings. You will have all downloads separated by the device name.

Click View Downloads to check the title of the series / movie. Once done, click on Remove Device.

The only limitation is that you cannot select individual titles to delete. Once done, you should be able to resume downloads on your Windows laptop / PC. If that doesn’t work, a good thing to do is restart the Netflix app.
