How to Create a Custom Template in Notion

Concept is making waves in the field of productivity. The company recently made the software free for personal use. The decision led to a spike in Notion usage. From the first moment, Notion feels pretty overwhelming. Fortunately, Notion offers a rich library of templates. It also helps it stand out from Trello, Evernote, OneNote, and others.

How to create a personalized model in the notion

Models are at the heart of the Notion experience. You can use the built-in template to get started or create a custom template from scratch. You can use templates for tasks, trip planning, financial tracking, subscription tracking, project management, etc.

Your choice of templates isn’t limited to the Notion library. You can browse the template gallery in the Notion user community. Notion also allows you to create a template for your specific use. This is how I have been using Notion from the start.

If you’re new to Notion and don’t know where to start, you really need to check out our Notion tips and tricks for beginners. It describes everything you need to know to get started with Notion.

Why do you need to create a custom template in Notion

With custom templates, you can easily replicate the content combinations you use frequently in Notion.

For example, let’s say you want to fill out the same form every day, asking yourself what you’re grateful for without constantly recreating it. Or you want to generate the same to-do list at the start of each week. You can also create a personalized financial tracker according to your uses and reuse it each month.

Notion offers you to create a personalized model using the model button. Let’s see how to find and use the Template button in Notion.

How to create a custom template in Notion using the template button?

Here I will be creating two custom models in Notion. As I mentioned, you can either create a template from scratch or use the built-in templates, make any necessary changes and save it as a custom template for later use.

I imported the weekly calendar template on my Notion page. I’ve changed the icon, added a cover photo, relevant model details, and now it’s ready to use. I will be using the template every week, so it’s inconvenient to import the same template every time and make changes. Instead, I’ll create a template from it. Follow the steps below to create a custom template in Notion.

Step 1: Import a relevant template from the template gallery and make the necessary changes.

2nd step: Create a new page in Notion and give it a relevant title.

Step 3: Type “/ template” and Notion will allow you to create a custom template button.

Step 4: The software will open the “Configure Template Button” dialog box.

Add a template button

Step 5: First, add a relevant name for the template button.

Step 6: Now you need to add blocks that you want to duplicate where the button is clicked.

Step 7: By default, it is defined as a Task button. Tap on the six dot menu and delete it.

Step 8: In the Notion sidebar, drag the creative template onto the template button.

Drag and drop

Step 9: Click on the “Close” button and the template button is now ready for use.

You can drag and drop this button to any Notion page, and with just one click, you can create a custom template for you.

Finance button

I created another template to track finances every month. By following the steps above, you can create a template button for monthly financial tracking and use it every month.

You can also create template buttons for normal tasks. I’ve seen Notion users use the task template button to quickly create tasks.

How to edit or delete the template button

Notion offers the possibility of modifying the name and the content of the button of the model. At any time, you can make changes to it or even remove the button from the template.

Place the pointer over the template button and you will see the little “Settings” icon at the end of the template button. Tap on it, and it will open the dialog to change the name of the template button and block them.

Configure the model

You can also tap the six dot menu and remove the button from the template entirely. Don’t worry, this will only remove the button from the template and won’t make any changes to existing templates.

Use Notion like a pro

As I mentioned, the models take the Notion experience to the next level. You can use the built-in template, edit it and also turn it into a template button. I’ve seen users create another Notion template from scratch and turn it into a template button for frequent use. How will you use the template button in Notion?
