Before we see how to do that, we also need to understand the reasons for these seemingly random events. The computer is stupid and never acts of its own free will. Not yet anyway. You can always edit a reason or a setting.

Let's start.

1. Why the computer restarts automatically

The most common reason behind this event is the updates. Windows 10 receives many updates that often fix known errors and bugs and sometimes bring new features. Some of these updates require Windows to shut down properly for installation.

To keep your work free from these automatic updates and reboots, Windows comes with a scheduling feature. You can use it to program hours during which the restart will take place. Tidy functionality, but only when you install it. Otherwise, Windows will ask you to update your computer from time to time. If you do not do this for a while, Windows will take the liberty to restart automatically and complete the installation of the updates.

These are called quiet hours and this useful feature has been released with the birthday update. If you have not figured it out yet, Windows updates are inevitable, as they should be. You can block it but you can not avoid it. You can and should handle it though.

Microsoft has written a step-by-step guide to how updates work in Windows 10. It will not help you set up your computer to handle updates and reboots, but it's a good read.

3. Edit Group Policy

There is another way to disable automatic restart after updates. Press the Windows + S keys, search for gpedit.msc and open it. This will open the Group Policy Editor.

Navigate to the folder structure below.

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update

Double-click the No automatic restart with connected users option for scheduled updates.
