How to Find and Fix Windows 10 Making Random Sounds

Recently, when I was working on my Windows 10 laptop, I heard random sounds coming from the speaker. It was quite disturbing because the sound came at random and I did not connect or disconnect any device. So why was my computer ringing? Find the answer in this article and also learn how to fix random sound issues on Windows 10 PC.

When your PC beeps or beeps, you’d be curious to know which program is playing the sound in the background. Me too. So, I present this post to you.

Let’s check out the different ways to find out the program responsible for random sound on Windows 10 computers.

1. Restart the computer

Sometimes this is a temporary problem that occurs due to a bug in third party programs. A simple restart should fix it.

2. Check the volume mixer

The volume mixer in Windows 10 shows all the programs that are currently using your audio devices. You have to open it and take its help to find out the program that is causing random noises. Once you have that, you can turn off its sound.

To use this method, right-click the volume icon on the taskbar. Select Open volume mixer.

You will see different sound bars. If an application emits a sound, the bar will display a green color. Keep looking at it for a while to identify the app. In my case, it was the Lightkey app (which, by the way, is a great text prediction tool for Windows). I had activated the audio assistance for that. As you can see, the application is visible in the volume mixer.

Pro tip: Many users have suggested that apps like Discord and Windows Defender are also responsible for the sound of random ringing. Check their settings.

3. Monitor the sound

If the above method did not help, you can use the Process Monitor tool to find the exact program that generates sound. You must configure the tool to track applications that produce sound. Do not be mistaken. Here are the steps in detail.

Step 1: Download the Process Monitor tool from the link below.

Step 4: Click on the first drop-down list and select Path. Choose Contains in the following. In the text box, type .wav. Finally, click on Apply. We added .wav because most notification sounds are in .wav format.

Step 6: Keep the Process Monitor tool in the background. Do not close it. Wait a while until you hear the sound. Next, look under Process name and path to find the application that pushes the notification sound.

4. Run the audio troubleshooter

You can also try running the native audio troubleshooter to find audio driver problems, if any. To run it, follow these steps:

Step 1: Open Settings on your PC. Go to Update & Security.

Point: Press Windows key + I to open the settings from any screen.

2nd step: Click on Troubleshooting in the left sidebar. Then click on Audio Playback on the right side and hit the option Run the troubleshooter.

Stage 3: Follow the on-screen instructions to finalize the process.

5. Fix the mouse

Many Windows 10 users have reported that a faulty mouse can also cause random connection and disconnection sound. So, disconnect it for a while and see if the problem is resolved. You can also try changing the USB port on your mouse.

If you don’t want to replace the mouse yet, you can mute the connection and disconnection sounds. However, this will apply to all devices that you connect to your PC.

For that, proceed as following:

Step 1: Open the Control Panel on your PC and select Small icons in View by.

Pro tip: If the problem is not caused by connecting or disconnecting an external device, you can test other sounds in this window. When you find a matching sound, mute it.

6. Reinstall the audio driver

An older version of the audio driver can also cause interference. Updating or reinstalling the audio driver may solve the problem. We have described in detail the steps for reinstalling the audio driver.

Could it be a hardware problem

The solutions mentioned above are useful when the problem is mainly related to software or an external device such as a USB key or a mouse. If the sound is coming from inside your computer, it could be a hardware problem. We suggest that you file a complaint with the customer service of the brand concerned if you have a warranty or visit a nearby computer repair shop.
