How to Fix Netflix Subtitles Not Working or Missing Error
The majority of movies and TV shows on Netflix are in English. The broadcasting service also offers several good films and television series in foreign languages. However, many users find it difficult to understand English on Netflix due to the different diction and pronunciation by artists from different regions. This is where the subtitles save the day. Everything is fine until the Netflix subtitles disappear or don’t work on your phone, tablet, laptop or desktop.
It can be very frustrating because you can’t keep watching this incredible show, film or documentary. Here are some simple and effective solutions that will help you find the subtitles at the bottom of your screen.
Let’s start.
1. Parameters
Have you checked your settings for the content you are viewing? Otherwise, start there and check if the subtitle option is selected. Even if it is selected, deselect it and select it again. This could revive things. Play any video and tap Audio and subtitles at the bottom of the screen.
You will see an option to turn it off or read it in English or other available languages, if available.
Remember to press Apply. It was on Android, but Netflix wrote a detailed guide to adjusting the captions for each platform.
2. Appearance of the subtitles
Is part of the subtitle missing on Netflix? You can easily change the font size and type to resolve it. Tap More, Settings and select Account. Press the appearance of the subtitles. These steps are for Android, but you can do the same on any platform.
Reduce the font size and see what it looks like in real time.
You can also change the font type. Check if the missing subtitle problem of Netflix is resolved or not.
3. Different platform, browser
Are you watching Netflix on your smartphone? Maybe your favorite Chrome browser? I would recommend that you try a different platform like a Windows 10 or macOS app, or a different browser like Firefox, Brave or Opera.
If Netflix captions work on another browser or platform, there is a problem with the platform or browser you are using. Read on to find out what can be done to correct the error. Until the error is corrected, keep watching on another platform.
It is also possible that the program or film you are trying to watch on Netflix is no longer available. Of course, you can try looking for it on another streaming service.
4. Browser extension
There are two things we’ll cover here, so don’t jump on this point in a hurry. The first is an add-on or incompatible extension. Open Netflix in incognito mode and check if the Netflix subtitles are still missing. Otherwise, you have to deactivate all the extensions, then reactivate them one at a time to find the culprit.
The second is a Chrome extension called NflxMultiSubs, which will add a second subtitle in the language of your choice. It supports Russian and Japanese, among others. It can solve the problem of missing subtitles and add one in your native language.
5. Logout, login
This is one of the tricks that often works with multiple services. So log out and log back in once. This can work to remove a bug or a temporary bug, which can cause the missing subtitle error.
6. Update, restart, retry
Update the Netflix app on the device. Whether it’s Android, iOS, Windows or macOS, get the latest version of the app. If you are using a browser, check for browser updates. Restart the device in question and try again. Check to see if that helps resolve Netflix captions that don’t or don’t work for you.
