WhatsApp is a great tool for sharing images and videos with our friends and family. We also receive many photos and videos on WhatsApp. To take full advantage of this, we use the help of a gallery application, as it is rather unpleasant to see photos directly in WhatsApp. However, for some users, WhatsApp images do not appear in the gallery.
Although the problem occurs on Android (Samsung, Mi, Huawei, OnePlus, etc.) and iPhone, there are different reasons for this. Mainly because WhatsApp for Android and iPhone processes images differently.
Let’s see how to make WhatsApp images appear in the gallery on Android and iPhone.
1. Restart the phone
If the WhatsApp photos or videos do not appear on your iPhone or Android phone, start by restarting your phone. To do this, turn off the phone, then turn it on or use the dedicated restart option.
2. Activate the media visibility setting on Android
On Android, if you upload a photo or video from WhatsApp, it automatically becomes available in the gallery app on your phone. No matter if you have a Pixel, Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi or any other branded phone, WhatsApp images will be visible in the gallery.
To protect your privacy, WhatsApp has launched a new feature for Android known as multimedia visibility that hides images downloaded from the gallery. So if your WhatsApp images or videos are not visible in the gallery, this setting may be responsible.
There are two ways to change the setting – for all contacts or to activate for individual contacts.
Note: By activating the Media visibility option, files previously hidden using this function will not become visible. It only works for new images and videos. To display hidden media, use the following method.
Enable media visibility for all contacts
For that, proceed as following:
Step 1: Open WhatsApp and tap the three dots icon at the top. Select Settings.
2nd step: Tap Cats. Slide the button next to Media visibility. It will turn green. Now, all new media files that you download from any contact will be visible in your gallery.
Enable media visibility for individual contacts
If the WhatsApp images are missing for certain contacts or groups only in the gallery, multimedia visibility can be disabled for them. To change it for individual contacts, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open the specific chat in WhatsApp. Tap the name of the contact or group at the top.
2nd step: Press Multimedia visibility and select Yes.
3. View WhatsApp images on Android
As mentioned above, only newly received photos and videos will start appearing in the gallery app once you activate the Media visibility setting. But what if you want to use the old WhatsApp images or videos? How to make these images visible in your gallery? To do this, you will need to view the images using a file explorer application.
There are four ways to view WhatsApp images.
Method 1: view WhatsApp images by moving them out of the private folder
When you activate the Media visibility setting, a new folder called a private folder is created in the WhatsApp Pictures & Videos folder. All files will go to this folder. You must move the files out of this folder.
Here are the steps in detail:
Step 1: Launch a file explorer application on your phone and go to the WhatsApp folder.
Point: The screenshots are taken using the FX Explorer application. Find out how it fares compared to Solid Explorer.
2nd step: Tap Media. Then tap on WhatsApp Images.
Step 3: You will see the private folder. Tap it. Select all the images and press Cut or Move.
Step 4: Go back to the WhatsApp Images folder and paste the copied images. Repeat the steps for WhatsApp> Media> WhatsApp Videos Folder to view the videos.
Now your previously uploaded images will be visible in the gallery.
Method 2: Delete the .Nomedia file
Another way to make hidden WhatsApp files visible in the gallery app is to delete the .nomedia file. If a folder contains a .nomedia file, its files will not appear in other applications. Therefore, you should delete this file.
To do this, launch the File Manager application on your phone. Then go to its settings or tap the three-dot icon. Select Show hidden files.
Once enabled, go to the WhatsApp folder. Tap Media> WhatsApp Images. If you see a .nomedia file, delete it. You should also take a look inside the private folder. Delete the .nomedia file it contains.
Method 3: rename the WhatsApp image folder
To do this, go to WhatsApp> Media folder using the File Explorer application on your phone. If you see a dot (.) In front of the name of the WhatsApp Images or Video folder, this means that the folder is hidden. You must rename the folder to delete the point. Once you’ve done that, open the gallery app and start enjoying the images.
Method 4: View from the Gallery app
You may have accidentally hidden the WhatsApp Images folder in your gallery app only. To view it, open the gallery app and view it by following the steps in your particular gallery app.
4. Clear the WhatsApp cache on Android
Step 1: Open Settings on your phone and go to Applications or Applications & Notifications.
2nd step: Tap WhatsApp under All apps.
Step 3: Tap Storage, then tap Clear cache. Restart your phone.
Note: Clearing the cache for WhatsApp will not delete your chats or media. Do not tap Clear Storage or Data as this will delete your WhatsApp data.
5. Activate Save to Camera Roll on iPhone
Unlike Android, WhatsApp images do not automatically appear in Photos or any other gallery app when downloaded to iPhone. To view them in the default gallery app, you must manually save each photo or enable the Save to Camera Roll setting. Only then will you see the photos uploaded to the gallery applications.
To activate the setting, open WhatsApp and tap Settings. Tap Cats. Activate the button next to Save to Camera Roll.
6. Grant permission to photos on iPhone
WhatsApp must have Photos permission to upload images and videos. You should check whether you have granted such permission or not.
To do this, open the Settings app on your iPhone. Scroll down and tap WhatsApp. Tap Photos. Select Read and write.
7. Check WhatsApp restrictions on iPhone
While this is unlikely to cause problems with WhatsApp images, you should still take a look at the screen time settings. To do this, open the iPhone settings. Tap Screen Time. Check all the options and see if something conflicts with WhatsApp.
8. Delete unnecessary images
If you have a lot of WhatsApp images, due to a low storage issue, the new WhatsApp images will not appear in the gallery. To fix this, delete old WhatsApp images using a file browsing application or directly from WhatsApp.
9. Check Google Photos
Are you using Google Photos as your default gallery app? If yes, did you use the Delete local copy or Unlock device storage option? By doing so, the copy of the device image will be deleted from your phone. This could be the reason for the sudden disappearance of WhatsApp images from your phone. If so, these photos are still available at photos.google.com.
10. Update WhatsApp
Sometimes the bug in WhatsApp can be responsible for the images that are not showing in the gallery. Alors, ouvrez Play Store (Android) et App Store (iPhone) pour vérifier si WhatsApp a besoin d’une mise à jour.
Last Resort – Réinstaller WhatsApp
