How to Group and Ungroup Elements in Canva on Mobile and PC

Canva is a great tool for creating posters, graphics, wallpapers, social media posts, and more. We’ve covered the steps for the web version of Canva and the mobile apps (Android and iPhone). You can use it to group text, elements, and other objects.

Let’s take a look at how to group and ungroup items in Canva on the web (Windows, Mac), Android, and iPhone.

How to group and ungroup items in Canva on PC

There are three ways to group items in the web version of Canva. Let’s check each one one by one.

Method 1: Temporarily group items using the mouse

If you want to act on several elements only once, you can group them together temporarily. To do this, drag your cursor and select the objects you want to group. You will notice that the selection border will appear around the selected objects. Now perform the required activities like resize, delete, move, etc. on them.

This is one of the easiest ways to group objects in Canva. However, the downside of this method is that all objects in the selected range (usually a square or rectangle) will be selected.

To ungroup selected objects using this method, click anywhere outside the selected boxes. The selection boxes will disappear and the objects will work individually.

Method 2: Temporarily group items using the keyboard shortcut

In this method, you will group items located anywhere on your canvas using keyboard shortcuts. First, click on one of the objects you want to select. Then press the Shift key on your keyboard and click on the other items you want to select.

To note: Hold down the Shift key while selecting other items.

This method gives you the free will to pick and choose items even if the items fall within the selected range if chosen with a mouse. As you can see in the screenshot above, only the three clouds are selected and not the hearts.

To ungroup an object, click the mouse button while pressing the Shift key on the keyboard. This will deselect the item.

Professional advice: You can use keyboard shortcuts to add or remove objects from the group if they are selected using the first method.

Method 3: Group and Ungroup Items Permanently

In both of the above methods, you will lose the group as soon as you click anywhere outside of the selection. To keep the selected items intact, whatever you do, you have the Group feature in Canva.

To do this, first select the required objects using method 1 or 2. That is, drag the mouse or select items using the Shift key. Once selected, click on the Group button in the upper right corner. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + G (Windows) or Command + G (macOS) to group items after items have been selected.

If you click or perform an action on an object, the same will happen for other grouped items.

To ungroup items, click one of the grouped items. Then click on the Ungroup button at the top. You can also take the help of keyboard shortcuts. Use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl + Shift + G (Windows) and Command + Shift + G (Mac) to ungroup items permanently.
