Is there a catch
When you use this method, the other person will not know that you created the story specifically for them, as happens in method two presented below. However, as you may have noticed, the method is tedious because you have to manually select all your subscribers.
In addition, if you have a public profile, your non-members can still have access to your story. This is because you have hidden your story from your followers only. If this is a problem, you must make your profile private. To do this, go to Instagram Settings> Privacy> Account Privacy. Activate the private account. We added a bonus section at the end on how to hide a story to non-followers.
Do others know when you hide your story
No. Your followers will not be informed if you hide their story from them.
Method 2: Use the closed friend list
Another way to hide your story to all but one person is to use a list of close friends. Introduced last year, the list of close friends is a special category of your subscribers who have exclusive access to your stories. When you add a story to your list of close friends, only people added to this list can see the story. Others do not have access to such stories.
So in this case you have to add this person to your list of close friends. Then add the story to your list of close friends only. In doing so, the story will only be visible to that person.
Here are the steps in detail.
Step 1: On the profile screen of the Instagram app, tap the three bar icon at the top. Select Close friends.
2nd step: Use search to find the person you want to add to your list. Remove the others from the list in case you do not want them to see your story. Then tap Done.
Step 3: Go to the home screen of the Instagram app and tap the camera icon at the top or on your story.
Step 4: Capture a new photo or select one from the gallery. You can modify them according to your preferences. Then press the Close Friends button at the bottom. The story will only be visible by the selected person.
Even if you can accomplish the task of hiding stories from everyone by applying the two methods above, it would have been great if Instagram had a native option without any conditions. Facebook, which owns WhatsApp and Instagram, provides the whitelist feature in WhatsApp and Facebook stories. So, we can still hope for it.
