How to Remove an Account from Google Photos
Although technology makes life easier for us, it worries us. This is true when it comes to our personal items such as photographs. One such interesting but confusing application is Google Photos. Here we will explain how to disconnect your account from Google Photos on iPhone and Android.
Many users, when they are using the Google Photos app for the first time, are surprised to see their gallery or camera roll images in the app. Since Google Photos is known for recording images in the cloud, it is obvious that users may be afraid that their photos will now be saved online. Worse, if you had previously added images to Google Photos from the web or the application itself, they will automatically appear on your phone.
For the same reason, people might want to unlink their Google account from it. To delete an account, you need to understand how Google Photos works. So let's start with this and then remove a Google Photos account.
How Google Photos works
Google Photos has three basic functions. First of all, it acts as a gallery application on your phones, tablets and iPad. Thus, any photo available on your device will be displayed in the Google Photos app. Like any other gallery application, you can manage and edit your offline photos in the app.
However, it is somehow different from the usual gallery applications. For starters, Google Photos lets you store your photos on the cloud. This feature works if you enable the backup feature in the Google Photos settings. A Google Account is required to back up the data. So, unless it's not enabled, Google Photos acts only as a gallery application. Once activated, all photos available on your phone will be synced to your Google Account.
Finally, it synchronizes your photos permanently between different connected devices. This means that any image or video available in the Google Photos cloud will automatically sync with your phone on Android and iOS.
How accounts work in Google Photos
For starters, Google Photos only works with Google Accounts. However, you can also use it without an account – more details below.
When you launch the app for the first time on your phone, you'll notice that your Google Account automatically appears in Google Photos. This happens if you use a Google Account on your device. Now, if you have multiple Google Accounts, all will be listed in the Photos application. And if you're not signed in to any Google Account, you'll be prompted to sign in. You can do it or ignore it.
Now you have to ask yourself if your images are uploaded to all your accounts in Google Photos. The answer is no. The images you see in Google Photos are only available on your phone. The application will ask you if you want to enable the backup function.
If you want to activate it, you will have to choose the Google Account. Once activated, images will be uploaded to this account only. However, as mentioned earlier, all photos already available in your Google Photos account will be displayed in the Google Photos app. You will need to switch accounts to view these images.
How to unlink Google Photos
We now come to the main question – how to delete a Google Photos account.
The answer to this question is complicated. You must first ask yourself why you want to do it. Let's check the different cases as well as their steps that may correspond to your reason.
Case 1: Stop uploading photos to Google
If you are concerned that your photos will be uploaded to the cloud, as explained above, this will only happen if you have enabled the backup setting. And if you did, you can disable the setting without disconnecting from the application. Then no new photos will be saved in the cloud. And the existing photos will remain intact.
Here are the steps:
Step 1: Open the Google Photos app and tap the three bar icon at the top. Select Settings.
2nd step: Tap Save and Sync and turn off the switch next to Save and Sync.
Case 2: Logging out of Google Photos
If you're not comfortable with the Google Photos online factor, you can sign out. However, if you have multiple Google Accounts on your phone, you can not log out of a single account on Photos and keep others connected. You will be disconnected from all accounts. And when you do, images will stop downloading on Google if the feature is turned on, and synced photos will be removed from your phone but not from Google Photos.
Here's how to sign out of Google Photos on Android.
Note: This feature is not available on iPhone and iPad.
Step 1: In the Google Photos app, tap the three-bar icon in the upper-left corner.
2nd step: Tap the little down arrow next to your name. Then tap Use without account option.
The Google Photos app will now work as an appropriate offline gallery application. You should also try the lighter and offline version of the Google Photos app known as Gallery Go.
Case 3: Completely delete the Google Account
Note: Use this method to sign out of Google Photos on iPhone and Android.
In the second case, you will still see the Google Accounts listed in the Google Photos app. You can tap any account to start using it.
However, if you want to delete the Google Account from the Google Photos app, you will need to delete it from your phone itself. In doing so, you will also be disconnected from other Google applications such as Gmail, YouTube, Drive, Calendar. You will also lose all your synchronized data on the phone, such as contacts, files in other applications like Google Drive.
Note: The data will be deleted from your phone only. It will not be removed from Google.
The steps are the same for Android and iOS.
Step 1: Open the Google Photos app. Tap the three-bar icon at the top. Then, tap the little down arrow next to your email.
2nd step: Select Manage accounts on this device.
Step 3: On iPhone, tap the Delete button on this device under your Google Account.
On Android, tap the Google Account and tap the Remove Account button on the next screen.
Note: Deleting the Google Account will delete all of its data from your phone, as mentioned above.
Case 4: Switch between multiple accounts
If you want to save your photos to another Google Account, you must disable the backup on the first account and activate it on the second. Here's how to proceed.
Step 1: Go to the settings of the Google Photos app from the three-bar icon at the top.
2nd step: Tap Save and sync. Google Photos will show you the e-mail ID where the photos are uploaded.
Step 3: Disable the toggle next to Save and sync.
Step 4: Return to the home screen of the application and press the three bar icon. If the Google Account is connected, tap it, otherwise, tap Add Another Account.
Step 5: Once logged in with the new account, tap the three-bar icon again. Then select Settings.
Step 6: Tap Save and sync. Activate the button next to Save and sync. Photos will now be uploaded to the new account.
