You may want to forward messages for two possible reasons. First, if you want to move Samsung Messages to the Google Messages app on the same phone, and second, to a new phone running the Google Messages app.

Note: The Google Messages app is called Messages. To avoid confusion in this article, we’ll use Messages by Google and Google Messages alternately. The app is also called Android Messages.

If you want to switch to the Messages by Google app on your Samsung phone, you don’t need to do much except to install the Messages app and make it your default app. All your text messages will automatically appear in the Messages app.

Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Download Messages from Google to your Samsung phone.

2nd step: Once installed, open it. You will be asked if you want to make this your default application. Tap Yes.

The Messages app will import all of your SMS messages. If you have a lot of messages, give the app time to load all the messages. That’s all you have to do. Now use the Messages app to send and receive messages.

Transfer Samsung Messages to Google Messages on Different Phone

Now, if you want to transfer your SMS from a Samsung phone to a new phone running Google’s Messages app, the procedure is slightly different. You will need a third-party app to export SMS from Samsung phone and import them to your new phone.

Note: You will need to follow the steps before formatting your old Samsung phone.

Here are the steps in detail:

Step 1: Download the SMS Backup & Restore app on your Samsung phone.

2nd step: Open the SMS Backup & Restore application. Grant the necessary permissions required by the app when prompted.

Step 3: Tap Set up backup. You will be asked what you want to back up – Messages or call logs. Turn on Messages and turn off the switch next to Call logs if you don’t want to save call logs. Tap Next.

Step 4: Now you will get various storage options to save your messages. Select the one you like from Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive.

You can also create a backup on your phone using the available toggle. However, you will need to email it to your other phone or manually upload it to one of the cloud storage services. If you don’t and format your phone, you will lose the backup. Click Next after selecting your storage choice.

Step 5: Then you will be asked if you want to schedule the backup. Since you only export and import the backup once, turn off the option. Tap Back up now. Let the app create a backup.
