How to Watch YouTube While Using Another Tab in Chrome

Many times you want to watch a YouTube video while working in another tab on the computer. If it had been on mobile phones, you could have done it easily using the YouTube app with the premium version. But what about the PC? How to watch video in other Chrome tabs on PC? Find the answer in this article.

You can use this feature to listen to music from YouTube in the background or watch live coverage while reading an article. Whether you’re on a PC or mobile device, you don’t need to have a premium version to run YouTube in the background.

Play YouTube video while browsing other tabs in Chrome on PC

There are two ways to watch YouTube while browsing. Let’s check them both.

Method 1: Watch YouTube while browsing the YouTube site

This method allows you to watch a YouTube video while checking the content on the YouTube site only. You will see a mini player at the bottom right of the screen. You will have to stay in the same tab in this method.

To activate the mini player, open the YouTube video in Chrome. Then click on the Mini player icon. You can also press the “i” button on your keyboard to launch the mini-player. You can access any YouTube page and the video will continue to play.

Method 2: Watch YouTube While Browsing Other Tabs

In this method, you can open any website in a different tab and your video will be played above your current tab. Here are the steps:

Step 1: Launch Youtube.com in Chrome and play a video.

2nd step: Right click anywhere on the video. You will get the following menu. Don’t click on anything.

Step 3: Right-click the video again. You will now get a different menu. Click Image in Image. You must double-click a YouTube video.

You will see a floating video player at the bottom right. You can change its location by dragging it. You can even increase or decrease the size using its borders.

At any time, if you want to open the full video, hover over the short video and click the Back icon on the tab.

Let’s start with Android first, then iOS.

There are two ways to do this.

Method 1: using the split screen

In this method, you must use the help of split screen function. When activated, YouTube provides the ability to play the video in the second half of the split screen. So you can use the first area to browse other Chrome tabs. Let’s see how to do it in detail.

Step 1: Launch m.youtube.com on the Chrome browser on your Android phone and play a video.

2nd step: Open the Recent Applications screen. This is the screen where you see the apps currently open on your phone. You can open it using the navigation button at the bottom or a gesture depending on how your phone supports it.

Step 3: Once in the Recent apps screen, long press the Chrome icon and select Split screen.

Step 4: Chrome will remain on half the screen. You will see two three-dot icons at the top. Now tap on the Chrome three-dot icon, not on YouTube. Select “Move to another window.

When you do that, you’ll notice that the tab that plays in the YouTube window will move to the other half of the screen, and you can use the Chrome tabs normally in the other half.

Point: You can increase or decrease the size of the windows on the split screen using the border in the middle.

Method 2: using desktop mode

If you only want to listen to the YouTube video in the background while using other Chrome tabs, just open a new tab and the video will run in the background.

Note: As is obvious, you cannot view the video using this method. You can only hear audio.

If that doesn’t work, you can do it using the Desktop site feature. Here are the steps:

Step 1: Open m.youtube.com on the Chrome browser and play the video of your choice.

2nd step: Tap the Chrome three-dot icon at the top. Select the Desktop site from there.

Note: You will see two three-dot icons. Press the first.

Step 3: Press the play button for the video if it is paused. Then switch to a new tab or press the home button to play the video in the background.

Note: If the video is not playing in the background, turn on notifications for Chrome and reset the app preferences.

Also on iOS, if you open a new tab while playing a video on the YouTube mobile site, the video will continue to play in the background. Otherwise, you can use the Office function.

To do this, tap the share icon while a video is playing on YouTube on Chrome. Select Request an office site. Then open a new application or a new tab.
