Top 3 Ways to Adjust Windows 10 Microphone Volume

Do people find it hard to hear you during Zoom or Skype calling sessions on your Windows computer? This may be because the volume of your computer microphone or headphones is low or muted. To resolve the issue, you need to check and adjust the volume of your audio device’s microphone accordingly. In this guide, we will show you three different ways to change the microphone volume on a Windows 10 PC.

Before continuing, you should note that you may need to adjust the microphone volume for each audio device you use on your computer. Each audio device (headsets or microphones) has a different default microphone volume setting. So if you’re using a new headset on your computer and people can barely understand what you’re saying, you need to adjust the headset microphone volume. Discover three ways to adjust the microphone volume on your Windows PC.

1. Adjust the volume from Windows 10 settings

The Windows 10 native settings menu can be used to make all kinds of changes to the functionality of your PC. To adjust the microphone volume on your Windows computer, simply go to the Sound section of the Windows Settings menu and customize the volume level to your preference. Here’s how.

Step 1: Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar (see the lower right corner of your PC).

This will launch the Sound section of the Windows Settings menu. Alternatively, you can also go to Settings> System> Sound to open the Windows sound settings menu.

Step 3: If an external headset / microphone is connected to your computer, make sure the device is selected. To do this, press the drop-down button in the “ Choose your input device ” section and select the microphone whose volume you want to adjust.

Step 4: Then scroll down to the Entry section and select Device Properties.

Step 5: Use the slider to adjust the volume of your microphone to your preferred level. Also test the volume levels by pressing the Test button.

2. Adjust the volume from the control panel

The Control Panel is another component of the Windows operating system that allows users to change certain system settings. Follow the steps below to find out how to adjust the microphone volume of your Windows PC from the Windows Control Panel.

Step 1: Type Control panel in the Windows search bar and press the corresponding result to launch the Windows Control Panel.

2nd step: Select “Hardware and Sound”.

Step 3: Select “Manage audio devices”.

Step 4: Go to the Registration section.

Step 5: Select the microphone and press Properties.

Alternatively, you can simply double tap the microphone to launch the device properties.

Step 6: On the Microphone Properties page, tap the Levels section.

Step 7: Use the slider to adjust the microphone level as desired and press OK to make the changes.

If you adjust your device’s microphone because it doesn’t work, or people can’t hear you when you make video / voice calls, your microphone may be muted. If the speaker icon is canceled on the Microphone Properties page, your PC’s microphone is muted. Press the icon to reactivate the microphone; a standard speaker icon should appear afterwards. Press OK to continue and save the changes.

If the other participants in a video / voice call still cannot hear you clearly after turning up the microphone, you can turn the volume up again. Just adjust the slider in the Microphone Boost section and press OK when you’re done.

This (Microphone Boost) will help improve the audio quality captured by your PC’s microphone. It is recommended that you communicate with another person on a voice or video call application when you adjust the volume of your microphone. This way you can confirm whether the volume setting you have made on the microphone is appropriate or needs to be changed further.

3. Adjust the volume using the audio / audio driver manager

The audio devices on your computer (microphone, speaker) are powered by an audio / sound driver. Typically, some audio drivers come with a dedicated application that allows users to easily configure and control audio devices on their computers. For example, the Realtek HD audio driver is preinstalled with a dedicated HD audio manager. This audio manager can also be used to adjust the microphone volume of your Windows PC. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Launch the device manager of your PC’s audio driver (usually located in the taskbar menu).

You can tap the microphone icon to activate Microphone Boost. There is also a noise canceling function which helps to reduce static background noise when using your PC’s microphone. You will need to check whether the Sound Manager on your machine has a similar setting or not.
