Top 3 Ways to Fix Google Chrome Black Screen Issues on Windows 10
Do you often witness a black screen when you launch Google Chrome on your Windows PC? Or maybe the Chrome window suddenly turns black? This is one of the many problems faced by Chrome users. In this guide, we will explain three (3) ways to fix Chrome’s black screen problem on Windows 10.
Often, Chrome freezes and displays a black page because it has trouble using the graphics unit (GPU) on your PC. Other times, the presence of excess / corrupted files in the browser’s GPU cache folder can cause such malfunction. The troubleshooting methods below are effective solutions to Chrome’s black screen problem. Let’s see them.
Method 1: Disable hardware acceleration
Hardware acceleration in Chrome generally helps the browser better manage graphics-intensive tasks using graphics hardware (GPU) on your computer. Although the feature was designed to help increase the overall speed of the browser, it is responsible for some performance issues, including this black screen issue.
Many users have confirmed that disabling hardware acceleration in Chrome has helped them fix the black screen issue on their Windows 10 PCs. You should try the same to prevent Google Chrome from going black in the future.
Step 1: On your PC home page, right-click the Google Chrome shortcut icon and select Properties.
2nd step: Go to the Shortcut tab. You’ll make some changes to the Chrome shortcut path in the Target dialog box. However, be very careful with the exact path.
Step 3: Now place your cursor at the end of the path, press the space bar once (to add a space) and type –disable-gpu at the end. The path in the Target dialog should now look like this:
"C:Program Files (x86)GoogleChromeApplicationchrome.exe" --disable-gpu
Step 4: Tap Apply, and then tap Continue to grant administrative permission to change the settings.
Step 5: Then click OK.
With that, you asked your computer to prevent Chrome from using your PC’s GPU each time you launch the browser using the application shortcut.
Next, you need to turn off hardware acceleration in the Chrome browser itself.
Note: If the active Chrome window is blocked on the black screen, you may need to wait for it to disappear before you can turn off hardware acceleration in the app. In this case, go to step 6 below. If Chrome is still blocked on the black screen, go directly to method # 2.
Step 6: Launch Chrome and tap the three-dot menu icon in the upper-right corner of the app.
Step 7: Select Settings.
Step 8: Scroll to the bottom of the Settings page and select Advanced.
Step 9: In the System section, uncheck the option “Use hardware acceleration when available”.
Now restart your Chrome browser. However, be sure to save the open tabs so you don’t lose any important work.
