First, & #39;Your data, controlled by youThe notification you see in Office is not an error message or warning, but a legitimate notification and looks like the image above. This is part of the new Microsoft Office privacy controls. As Microsoft remains committed to providing its user with control over the information it wants to share or allow to collect and use when using Office 365, it displays this message. Thanks to this, users need to configure privacy controls according to their preferences.

When you see the notification on your computer screen, you can follow these actions:

  1. Accept the notification message
  2. Configure if you want to send optional data to Microsoft
  3. Let Office boost your experiences

1) Accept the notification

Microsoft's continued commitment to privacy has led to the development of new principles that guide the business approach to increase transparency and customer control over the data collected by Microsoft's main products. As such, you see the notification appear when you launch an Office 365 app. So when you see this message, press the "Next" button visible at the bottom of the window.

2) Configure if you want to send optional data to Microsoft

As soon as you hit ‘NextYou will be taken to a new screen which allows you to choose to send / not send the optional data to Microsoft. You can select one of the options below

  • Yes, send optional data
  • No, do not send optional data

If you know, there are two levels of diagnostic data for Office Desktop,

  1. Diagnostic data required
  2. Optional diagnostic data

These two types of data are used to quickly detect, diagnose and resolve problems before they become large-scale problems or pose security risks. In addition to this, optional data helps Microsoft know the preferences of a wide range of customers.

3) Let Office boost your experiences

Once you have chosen the desired option, you will be directed to the final screen of "Boost your experiences". It allows Office 365 subscribers to connect their experiences to online services and analyze its content to provide recommendations and suggestions.

Microsoft intends to use this data to ensure the security, updating and operation of Office applications, as intended, and to make product improvements.
