Many users running Windows 7 experience a Black wallpaper after installing a particular update. He panicked as if Microsoft was limiting personalization features, but it turns out to be a bug. After installation KB4534310, users’ backgrounds may be displayed in black. The symptom is only for those who use Stretch mode for their wallpaper. If they have not stretched, there is no black screen.

Microsoft has recognized this problem, and they’re working on a resolution. Expect an update in a future version, which will be made available to customers running Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. The black screen problem also occurred earlier, but it was to indicate the copy of the Windows 7 Starter Edition is not authentic. It’s different this time.
Mitigate Windows 7 Black desktop background problem
- Open Windows settings (Win + I)
- Go to Personalization> Background
- Set your custom image to an option other than scope, such as fill, In shape, Tile, or Center.

Now here’s the disappointment. Update KB4534310 was released on January 14, the latest date for supporting Windows 7. You will not be able to use Stretch mode and will have to use something other than that. I hope they will deploy this to everyone.
I’m sure a lot of consumers will be upset about this, but it’s time for us to switch to Windows 10 or any other operating system. Windows 7 is no longer secure unless you never connect to the Internet or a USB drive. That said, Microsoft also recommends installing two updates if you’re still to install KB4534310. This is the maintenance stack update (SSU) of March 12, 2019 (KB4490628) and the latest SHA-2 update (KB4474419) Released September 10, 2019. The updater causing the issues is a security update for Microsoft Scripting Engine, Windows Input and Composition, Windows Storage and File Systems, and Windows Server.
