Instagram’s Reels came to life to compete with the TikTok’s Duet option. Today, you can create 15-second, 30-second, or 60-second Reels to post for your followers and others. With the new Remix feature, you can use someone’s reels or respond to someone’s reels.
Remix will let you create new Reels to respond to a Reel posted by someone else and then place it alongside the original Reel. This post shows you how to get started with Remixing Reels.
How to Use Instagram Reels with Remix
Instagram Reels are short-form videos featured on the Explore page and can be re-shared to Stories. Remix can make Reels more exciting since it allows the content creators to collaborate with others and create new entertaining mini clips. Suppose you’ve stumbled upon a Reel that you’d like to Remix. Here’s how to do it. The option is available in iOS and Android apps only.
Step 1: Find an Instagram Reel video that you wish to Remix.
Step 2: Tap on the three-dots menu in the lower-right corner under the Share button.
Step 3: Select the ‘Remix this Reel’ option that appears in the menu that pops up from the bottom.
Step 4: The screen will split into two where the original video appears on the left side. Instagram will place the video on the right after you shoot it or add it from your camera roll. Press the record button to start filming your video.
Step 5: After capturing, you’ll be able to preview your Remix by pressing on the relevant button.
Step 6: From the Preview window, you can go ahead and edit your Reel’s sound, add a voiceover or stickers, and write or doodle on it.
Step 7: When you’re finally satisfied with how it looks, press Next.
Step 8: You’ll see the Posting page. Here you can write a caption for your Reel, add a location, or tag people. After that, press Share.
Instagram will post the collaboration video on your profile and tag it as a ‘Remix with name’ – the person who posted the original Reel. Their username also appears on top of the original Reel in the collab video.
How to Enable and Disable Remix for Reels
Not everyone is comfortable with strangers using their Reels. If you feel the same, you can prevent people from creating a Remix using your Reels. You can either turn off the feature for individual Reels or all (although the latter option doesn’t seem to be available for all accounts).
How to Disable Remix for Individual Reels
Step 1: Go to your Instagram profile and find and open the Reel you want to disable Remix for.
Step 2: Tap on the three-dots menu in the upper-right corner of the display.
Step 3: A menu will pop up from the bottom. Select the ‘Turn Off Remixing’ option.
It’s possible to Remix your Reel. For that, press the ‘Remix This Reel’ option at the bottom of the same menu.
How to Disable Remix for All Reels
If you don’t want others to create Remix from your Reels.
Step 1: On your Instagram profile, tap on the hamburger menu in the upper right corner.
Step 2: Select Settings.
Step 3: Go to Privacy.
Step 4: Tap on ‘Reels and Remix.’
Step 5: Toggle off the ‘Allow for Reels’ option.
That’s it, others won’t get to use your Reels.
How to Enable Remix for Older Reels
On the other hand, if you have Reels older than April 2021, you’ll need to manually enable the Remix feature, as it won’t be on by default like the newer ones.
The process remains the same – open an older Reel and press on the three-dots menu. This will bring up a pop-up menu from the bottom. Select the option to ‘Enable Remixing’ for that particular Reel. Repeat the same process for the other older Reels.
Start Remixing Your Reels
Instagram has been taking steps to position itself as a strong TikTok competitor, and the addition of Remix showcases this strategy. If you prefer Instagram over TikTok anyway, try out this Duet alternative on your favorite Instagram Reels. If not, you can go back to TikTok or create one for yourself if you don’t have an account.
Instagram also has another collaborative feature available, allowing Instagram users to create posts and Reels together. Check our guide on how to create your first collab post or video.
