Top 4 Fixes for iPhone Showing Wrong Caller ID
Picture this: your iPhone rings, and according to the caller ID on the screen, Karen, a co-worker, is the caller. But in the strangest turn of events, the voice you hear when you answer the phone is that of Daniel – your cousin living in another country. You spend the next 2 minutes wallowing in complete confusion and asking questions. You entered both contact details correctly and Daniel does not have Karen’s phone (or number) either. So what exactly is going on? Well, it’s just your iPhone showing the wrong caller ID.
If not fixed as soon as possible, this problem may cause havoc or cause you inexplicable and embarrassing problems. I mean, take a look at the plight of the iPhone user in the screenshot below.
This change of contact or wrong caller ID error is mainly caused by a bug affecting (the apps on) iPhone running iOS 14. Refer to the solutions in the section below to resolve the issue.
1. Restart the iPhone
As some affected iPhone users have reported, a simple restart of the device could fix this issue.
If you are using an iPhone with Face ID or one without the home button, press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons for about 2 seconds. Move the power off slider to the right to turn off your device. Wait about a minute and turn your iPhone back on – press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
For iPhones with a home button, hold the side button and drag the power off slider to the right. Restart your device by holding down the side button until you see the Apple logo. Have someone call your iPhone and check if the issue has been resolved.
Despite the effectiveness of this method for some users, others report that it is only a temporary solution. This leads us to believe that the problem could be caused by an unauthorized application incompatible with your phone’s operating system. Specifically, iOS 14. Try the following troubleshooting solution if your iPhone still shows the wrong caller ID after restarting a device.
2. Update the application
According to several users in Apple’s support communities, this issue with iPhone showing wrong Caller ID often occurs after making voice or video calls on third-party messaging apps from the reports we have. collected. WhatsApp, Zoom and LINE are the most frequently reported apps that cause this issue. Now, it is possible that these apps are not yet fully compatible with your iPhone’s operating system, thus mistakenly labeling your iPhone contacts during calls.
To resolve this issue, go to the Updates section of the App Store and update all voice and video calling apps on your iPhone.
Step 1: Launch the App Store and tap on the profile icon in the top right corner.
2nd step: Scroll down to the Update available section and tap the Update button next to the relevant apps.
If the apps do not have an update available that fixes the bug, or if the Caller ID issue persists after updating the apps, continue to the next method.
3. Reset iPhone settings
This is another solution we have found to fix errors responsible for bad caller ID on your iPhone effectively. Resetting your iPhone settings will not erase personal data, accounts, or media files (photos and videos). On the contrary, basic device configurations like network settings, keyboard preferences, privacy and location settings, etc. will be restored to factory default settings. Your applications are also secure; none will be deleted or uninstalled. You can find out more about what happens when you reset your iPhone before continuing.
Step 1: Launch the iPhone settings menu and select General.
2nd step: Scroll down to the bottom of the page and tap Reset.
Step 3: Then select “Reset all settings”.
Step 4: Enter your iPhone password and tap “ Reset all settings ” when prompted.
If the problem persists after resetting your iPhone and after trying all the other troubleshooting solutions described above, we recommend that you update your iPhone.
4. Update iOS
As mentioned earlier, this issue is (currently) peculiar to some users running the first version of iOS 14 on their iPhones. Fortunately, an updated version of the affected operating system (iOS 14.0.1) is available for all users around the world. To update your device’s operating system, launch the Settings menu, navigate to General> Software Update and tap “Download & Install”.
Make the right calls
If everything you’ve tried turns out to be aborted on your iPhone, you might have to wait for Apple to roll out another stable update that (permanently) fixes the error. And since this is a relatively new bug primarily affecting iOS 14 devices, it may take a while to find a fix. From our end, we will continue to do further research and update this article with more solutions that work for all iPhone users.
