How to set up and use Surface Dial

If you do not know Surface Dial – it's a creative tool that can be used to control Windows 10. It can be used to navigate menus, control volume and other similar tasks. In this article, we will show you how to configure and use the device.

To use Surface Dial, your computer must have Bluetooth 4.0 LE. Surface Dial works on the screen with Surface Studio (1st generation), Surface Studio 2, Surface Book 2, Surface Pro 4, Surface Pro (5th generation) and Surface Pro 6. If you use another type of PC, use Surface Dial the number on a desk or other flat surface.

How to configure and use Surface Dial

Follow these steps to configure the surface

  1. On your PC, select the beginning button and then select Settings > features > Bluetooth and other devices.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth.
  3. Pull the bottom of your Surface dial to open the battery compartment. Make sure there are two AAA batteries inside.
  4. Remove the tab from the battery under the dial of your surface.
  5. Press and hold the button for 5 to 7 seconds, then let it go. The Bluetooth LED blinks – it is in front of the button on the other side of the batteries.
  6. Return to the Bluetooth settings page on your PC, then select Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth.
  7. To choose Surface dial from the list of devices. Follow the additional instructions if they appear, then select Finished.
  8. Remove the protective film from your surface dial.

You have now successfully configured Surface Dial and it is ready to use!

How to use the surface dial

Surface Dial helps you create naturally and ergonomically and when you use Surface Pen with it, Surface Dial keeps you in the creative flow.

1) You can use it in the Windows Ink workspace.

Do the following:

  • Select the pen icon, then open Sketchpad. Or, simply click on the top of the Surface Pen.
  • Open Sketchpad and the Pens tool is automatically selected.
  • Rotate your Surface dial to alternate between pen, pencil, highlighter, and eraser.
  • Hold down your Surface wheel to view the other tools in the wheel menu.
  • Turn the wheel to the left or right to highlight the tool you want to use.
  • To select it, press and release, then start drawing.

2) You can also use Surface Dial with applications.

Surface Dial works with applications included with Windows 10, such as Paint 3D, Groove Music, Microsoft Edge, and Maps. It also works with professional-level software, such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.

Here are some things you can do with Surface Dial:

  • Volume: Turn left to lower it or right to mount it. Click to disable and reactivate the sound.
  • Scroll: Turn left to scroll up or right to scroll down.
  • Zoom: In Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, rotate left to zoom out or right to zoom in. Click to fit it on the screen.
  • Cancel: Turn left to browse the cancellation history or right to browse the history. Click to perform a simple cancellation.
  • Brightness: Turn left to make the display less bright or right to make it brighter.

To customize your Surface Dial features, go to your Surface Book, open Start, and select Settings > features > Wheel.

  • StaffPad.
