Double Exposure in PicsArt: A Step-By-Step Guide for Creating Impressive Photos

PicsArt is one of the powerful photo editing apps for Android and it’s easy to see why. This simple image editing application brings together several features and effects that give you a lot to experience. And the double exposure function is one of the many popular features of this Android app. If you like creativity, you can transform simple portraits into works of art by artfully superimposing two photos on top of each other.

In the good old days of analog cameras, creating a double exposure was by no means an easy task. Good lighting was of the utmost importance. In addition, with the self-winding cameras, the effect was a bit difficult to obtain because the film automatically rolled up to the next frame. To add to that, it was an expensive affair, thanks to the movies.

Many things have changed over the years, thanks to digital photography and advances in image editing. Now, superimposing two images on top of each other no longer needs a few minutes.

How to create a double exposure in PicsArt

Double exposure photos work best in portraits. Nothing like the perfect blend of a completely abstract photo and a serene black and white portrait.

Step 1: tweak the basic photo

When it comes to creating clean double exposure digital images, the best bet is to choose a black and white image. The idea is to superimpose it with a second contrasting image. This gives both images the ability to shine brilliantly.

If you don’t have a black and white image, don’t worry, because PicsArt has many features to convert your images to black and white.

To convert an image to black and white, tap Effects> FLTR and choose one of the black and white filters.

If you are not satisfied with the image, press the filter button and drag the sliders according to your preferences. Alternatively, you can also modify the color curves to produce a darker image.

In my case, I chose to go ahead with a black and white portrait. The sharp edges of the silhouette will add a new dimension to the end result.

Step 2: Add your second photo

Now that your base is ready, here is the tricky part – choose the layer image, i.e. the second image.

The rules are simple. The layer image should complement the main image. At the same time, the colors must be a little sharp so that the image clearly stands out from your basic image.

To add the second layer, tap Add Photo and choose your layer image from the gallery on your phone.

Next, tap the Opacity tab and drag the slider to the right. The reduced opacity will make it easier for you to see what the layer will look like on the base image.

When finished, adjust the layer image as needed. Be careful and don’t stretch it much.

Step 3: merge your images

Next, swipe left on the bottom ribbon and select Mix. Here you will have many options such as Normal, Add, Lighten, Multiply, etc.

Select Lighten from the list and you will see the tool work its magic.

Once done, go back to Opacity and adjust the opacity of the image according to your preferences. Magic, I would say.

Step 4: Remove the background

Wait, your work is not yet finished. There are a few things to consider, such as the borders of the layer image.

To delete them, press the Eraser tool at the top.

At this point it is important to keep in mind that the default opacity of the gum will result in a harder mixing.

The best bet is to reduce the opacity and hardness of the gum. To do this, press the Eraser icon once more to access the settings. Then adjust the opacity and hardness and touch the part you want to remove.

When the image is ready, finish by emphasizing the image.

In my case, I cropped the unnecessary part and played with the color curves to give a bluish tone to the upper part.

How to remove the background in PicsArt

One of the biggest advantages of PicsArt is that it allows you to create stickers from images. He intelligently identifies the human figure and separates the foreground from the background.

So if you want your end result to have a clean background with just your face in focus, here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Select Cut in the lower ribbon and press Person. The selected area will turn red.

Usually the selections are perfect, but if you need to modify them further, there are a few tools at the bottom.

You can use the Brush tool to add other items to the selection, while the Eraser tool can be used to remove unnecessary selected parts.

2nd step: Tap Save for good, save the image as a sticker. Now that the sticker is finished, it’s time to add a white or light background to it.

Step 3: Select Fit in the ribbon at the bottom. This action will place the sticker on a white or transparent background. You can also choose to crop the image at this point according to your preference.

If you want to experiment with different colors, simply select one from the list of available funds.

Once you have completed this step, it is as usual. The addition of a neat urban landscape and the removal of certain elements gave rise to this double exposure image.
