WhatsApp is one of the most widely used instant messaging services in the world. People use WhatsApp to connect to loved ones who are far away, students use WhatsApp to share their academic data with each other, collaborate with colleagues and so on. One minute but one feature that has a large-scale impact is the availability of Dark mode for Android and iPhone. After testing it for a few months on the beta version of WhatsApp, Facebook is now deploying this functionality to the public.
When creating the dark mode for WhatsApp, the team focused on two key areas. They are:
- Readability: When choosing colors, we wanted to minimize eye strain and use colors closer to the system default on iPhone and Android respectively.
- Information hierarchy: We wanted to help users easily focus their attention on each screen. We did this using color and other design elements to make sure the most important information stood out.

Activate dark mode on WhatsApp for Android
- If you are using Android 9, first open WhatsApp on your Android device.
- Select the menu in the upper right corner, indicated by three vertical dots.
- Press on Settings.
- Select now Cats.
- Go to Theme and finally select Dark.
- This will activate the dark theme on WhatsApp on your Android device.
- If you are using Android 10, just set your system theme as Dark and it will also appear on WhatsApp.
Activate the dark theme on WhatsApp for iPhone
- This feature is only available on iOS 13 and later.
- Set your system theme as Dark to enjoy the latest dark mode on WhatsApp for iOS.
The reason behind this is that the universal implementation of the theme in applications is due to the availability of system APIs which allow these applications to read the configuration of the theme of the device without compromising the privacy issues known so far. .
