How to Fix OK Google Command Not Working on Android
One of the easiest and coolest ways to launch the Google Assistant on an Android smartphone is to call the invoke command – OK Google. However, Google Assistant surprisingly does not respond to the command for some users. To help you correct this anomaly, we have listed seven possible solutions in the section below.
Also, it would be a little weird if you keep saying “OK Google” with different tones and expressions. This will not solve the problem. A simple restart of the device would cause the “OK Google” command to work again. If that doesn’t work, try the fixes below.
1. Try another command
The Google Assistant is commonly activated by many Android users using the keyword “OK Google”. On some devices, the Assistant only responds “Hey Google” in a surprising way. That said, some users can activate the wizard using two keywords – “OK Google” and “Hey Google”.
If the Google Assistant on your device does not respond to the “OK Google” command, try “Hey Google”. And if that doesn’t work as well, there are most likely hiccups with your Google Assistant app or its voice command configuration.
2. Clear data from Google application cache
Clearing an application’s cache data can help you fix the application when it is slowing down, malfunctioning, or when some of its features are not working. Clearing the Google app cache can (and should) help get the Google Assistant OK Google command working on your device again.
Just launch the Android Settings menu and go to Applications & Notifications> Application Information> Google> Storage & Cache and hit the Clear Cache button.
Try to pronounce the keyword OK Google (or Hey Google) and check if Google Assistant is activated.
3. Activate Google Assistant voice activation
You should also check whether the Google Assistant on your smartphone is configured to respond to OK Google or Hey Google. Otherwise, saying these commands will not work, no matter how many times you say it to your device.
Follow the steps below to activate voice activation of the Google Assistant on your Android device.
Step 1: Launch the Google app and tap More in the lower right corner.
2nd step: Then select Settings.
Step 3: Select Voice.
Step 4: In the Hey Google section, tap Voice Match.
Step 5: Now check that the Hey Google option is enabled. If it is disabled, press to activate and activate the Hey Google command.
Note: Depending on the manufacturer of your device or the version of the Android operating system, the Voice Match option / keyword may be “OK Google” and not “Hey Google”, as shown in the screenshot above.
4. Check Google’s language settings
Google Assistant currently supports more than 30 languages on Android devices. If the OK Google command doesn’t work on your device, make sure the language you speak matches the default Google language (s) on your device.
Follow the steps below to check or change the default Google language on your Android smartphone.
Step 1: Launch the Google app and tap More in the lower right corner.
2nd step: Then select Settings.
Step 3: Select Voice.
Step 4: Tap Languages.
Step 5: From the list, select your language (s) and press Save.
Suppose you select French, Italiano and Deutsch, your Google Assistant will respond when you say “Hey Google” or “OK Google” in these respective languages.
5. Turn off the battery saver
Android’s built-in battery saver could also temporarily disable the Google Assistant if it detects that the feature is overcharging your device’s battery. And that would prevent Google’s OK command from working.
Turn off your battery saver and check if your device responds to the Google OK command.
Step 1: Launch the Android Settings menu and select Battery.
2nd step: Select Battery saver.
Step 3: Press the “Deactivate Now” button to deactivate the battery saver.
If Google’s OK command still doesn’t work, try disabling Adaptive Battery Saver. Go to Settings> Battery> Adaptive battery and turn it off.
Now say the Google OK keyword again and check if Google Assistant is activated.
6. Update Google Play services
To use the Google Assistant, your Android device must have Google Play services updated to the latest version at all times. Go to the Google Play services page on the Google Play Store to install or update the app on your device.
7. Recycle the Google Assistant
Another reason why the OK Google command does not work on your Android device could be due to the fact that Google Assistant no longer recognizes your voice or finds it difficult. If so, you may need to recycle the wizard with your voice model.
Launch the Google app and tap More> Settings> Voice> Voicemail> Resume voice pattern. Follow the prompts and say the commands on your screen to recycle the Google Assistant.
Then:
The Google Assistant keeps a record of each activity, conversation, and also records your audio. Read the linked article below for how to delete Google Assistant history on Android devices.
