How to migrate from Office 365 Video to Microsoft Streams

Office 365 video, Microsoft's solution for sharing corporate videos was primarily designed to host videos for an organization's own internal use. It will soon be replaced by Microsoft Streams. So if you want to migrate to Microsoft Streams from Office 365 Video, here is a quick guide to help you.

Transition to Microsoft Stream from Office 365 video

The transition to Microsoft Stream from Office 365 video can be performed by administrators of the Office 365 video portal. Only these administrators have exclusive rights to perform the migration. Global Office 365 administrators and SharePoint administrators do not have this permission. To begin the transition process:

  1. Start migration
  2. Full check
  3. Learn about the permission mapping experience.

1) Start migration

When eligible, tenant administrators will see the banner on the Office 365 video home page to initiate the migration.

The migration experience page will provide all the necessary information regarding the changes you can expect during the migration. For example, it will warn you against the interruption or the end of the migration, once it has started.

Once you've browsed the information, press the "Start migration»To start the migration process. If prompted, confirm to continue.

2) Full verification

Once the migration process is complete and you put it online, you will find

All Office 365 video links and integration codes are automatically redirected to Microsoft Stream. In addition, you can verify that the migration is completed by,

  • Check if videos transferred from Office 365 Video show up in Stream.
  • The title and descriptions of all videos are correct.
  • Closed captions / closed captions are associated with videos in Stream.
  • When you edit the video, the permissions indicate that the videos belong to the group (which was the Office 365 video channel).

In addition to that, you will need to confirm that

  • Office 365 video channels are now displayed as groups in Stream.
  • Videos inside Office 365 videos appear inside the corresponding group in Stream.
  • The permissions that you previously configured for the Office 365 video channel are now moved to the Stream group, including individual users and AD security groups.

Finally, users and security groups who were previously an Office 365 video administrator are now by default feed administrators.

3) Experience in mapping payment authorizations

A channel in Office Video has 3 levels of permissions –

After migration to Microsoft Stream, navigation in the permissions pane should show that the same permissions are copied from Office Video to Stream.

The migration shouldn't take too long, but depending on the number of videos and channels you have, the delay may vary. It may take a few days to complete the copy.
