Macro photos on iPhone are finally here. The iPhone 13 and 13 Pro devices are the first Apple smartphones to support Macro mode in the original Camera app! Just bring the lens closer to the subject you want to shoot close-up. Zoom in and shoot!
How to take macro photos on iPhone 13
For a great photo, you have to find the right subject. Macro photography is popular for small subjects like bugs, bugs, flowers, and various plants.
You also need the theme to be well lit.
Finally, you need to bring your iPhone 13 close to the subject. When the distance becomes less than 6 inches, the macro mode will be triggered automatically. The viewfinder shakes to signal that the iPhone 13 has gone into Macro mode!
Advice: Do not get closer than 2 cm. Instead, use the zoom dial to magnify the subject up to 15x!
How to Record Macro Videos on iPhone 13
Capturing close-up movies works in exactly the same way. The only difference is that you can zoom in up to a maximum of 9x.
Advice: Don’t zoom in too much though, or you risk the video getting very shaky, especially if you’re not using a gimbal!

Macro mode does not work
If macro photos do not automatically activate when you approach a subject, the feature may be disabled on your device!
IPhone 13 is set to automatically switch to Macro mode when the above conditions are met. However, since iOS 15.1 there is a Macro toggle in the camera settings. If you accidentally turn it off, macro photos will not work!
How to activate macro mode
- Open Settings and scroll to Camera.
- Scroll down to Auto macro and activate the feature!
Macro photos not available on iPhone?
As mentioned above, Macro mode is exclusive to the iPhone 13 range. If you have an older device, you will not be able to use this feature natively.
How to get macro mode on all iPhones
You can take macro photos on iPhone 12 and earlier if you are using third party app store apps. One of them is: Halide Mark II (direct link)
