Top 4 Ways to Fix Windows 10 Tablet Mode Not Working
A laptop or all-in-one computer with a touch screen can be extremely useful. If you ever want to navigate your touch screen computer using only the screen, you should activate Windows Tablet mode. It fully optimizes the display interface of your PC for use on the screen. When you are unable to use tablet mode on your Windows 10 PC, refer to the troubleshooting solutions detailed in this guide.
A small system problem could cause Windows Tablet mode to deviate from its normal function. The problem could also be attributed to some major technical errors. A deleted or improperly configured registry file, for example, could make tablet mode non-functional. Some users have also reported experiencing this issue after recently installing a Windows 10 update on their computers. Without wasting more time on the probable sources of this problem, let’s move on to the solutions.
1. Resume tablet mode
As mentioned earlier, the problem can sometimes be due to a problem in the normal operation of your PC’s Windows 10 operating system. If your computer does not enter Tablet mode after activating it, deactivate the function and reactivate it.
Step 1: Tap the note icon in the lower right corner of the taskbar to open the Windows Action Center. You can also use the keyboard shortcut “Windows key + A”.
2nd step: Tap Tablet mode to turn it off.
Step 3: Press Tablet mode again to turn it back on. This could help reset tablet mode to return to normal functionality.
If this trick doesn’t work, try restarting your computer.
2. Reconfigure tablet mode
If tablet mode is not enabled (default) when you turn on your computer, you may need to reconfigure the tablet mode settings. This is because Microsoft has disabled automatic tablet mode in Windows 10 Build 18970. If you want your PC to be in tablet mode at all times, you must configure your computer to do so manually. Here’s how.
Step 1: Launch the Windows Settings menu and select System.
Quick advice: Use the keyboard shortcut “Windows key + I” to quickly launch the Windows Settings menu.
2nd step: Tap Tablet mode in the left pane to open the tablet mode settings menu.
Step 3: Tap the drop-down option in the “When I connect” section.
Step 4: Then select tablet mode.
This should prompt your PC to use the default tablet mode each time you connect.
3. Tablet mode with forced activation
If none of the troubleshooting fixes detailed above work, you should try to activate Tablet mode via the Windows Registry Editor with force. Follow the steps below to do so.
Note: This method is quite technical and things could go wrong if you modify a file / registry incorrectly. We strongly recommend that you back up the registry files on your PC before continuing with the steps below.
Step 1: Launch the Run command box using the keyboard shortcut “Windows key + R”.
2nd step: Then enter regedit in the dialog box and select OK or press Enter on your keyboard.
Step 3: Copy the directory path shown below into the Registry Editor navigation box, paste it and press Enter on your keyboard.
ComputerHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionImmersiveShell
Step 4: Right-click on TabletMode and select Edit.
If you cannot find TabletMode in this directory, go to step 5. Otherwise, go to step 9.
Step 5: Right-click on an empty space in the window and select New.
Step 6: Then select “D-WORD value (32 bit)”.
Step 7: Rename the newly created value to TabletMode.
Step 8: Now right click on TabletMode and select Edit.
Step 9: Replace the value date with 1 and press OK.
Finally, activate tablet mode from the action center and see if the feature works now. If the problem persists, continue to the next solution.
4. Update Windows
Some Windows 10 users with unresponsive tablet mode were able to restore functionality to their computers by installing a Windows update. If this problem is due to a bug in the Windows 10 version running on your computer, the best bet is to update your computer to a Windows version without a bug. Go to Settings> Updates & Security> Windows Update and download the available updates.
If you’ve noticed that Windows 10 tablet mode has stopped working after a recent operating system update, you should revert to the previous Windows version / build from which you updated.
