Instagram allows you to mute someone’s posts if you don’t want to see them. Apart from that, Instagram also allows you to turn off other features. You can turn off a story, profile, or discussion in private messages. We’ve covered how to turn them all back on in this article. While Instagram is known to disrupt the way you consume posts, stories, and reels, mute brings some unique abilities to the mix. It differs from hiding, blocking, restricting, etc. in several ways.
Let’s see how to wake someone up on Instagram on Android and iPhone. But before that, let’s understand what happens after you turn someone’s audio back on so that you can make the right decision.
What happens when you unmute someone on Instagram
As mentioned above, you can turn off a person’s story and posts. When you turn off a person’s stories, their stories move to the end of the story bar and stop appearing at the start of the thread at the top.
When you re-enable stories, they will start appearing in the story bar normally with the colored ring whenever the person downloads a new story. Stories are also automatically read when you watch stories, which was turned off when you turned a story off.
Likewise, accounts that you’ve disabled messages from won’t appear in your feed unless you turn them back on. If you reactivate an account, messages from people in your feed are displayed each time they post a new message.
To note: Muting or unmuting someone does not send a notification to the affected person. In other words, the other person won’t know when you turn it off or back on.
Now that you know what happens when you reactivate someone, here are some ways to reactivate them.
Method 1: reactivate stories from Instagram feed
When you turn off a person’s story, their profile icon appears at the end of the story bar at the top. You need to scroll to the end of the list of stories to view the disabled accounts and re-enable them. Long press the account you want to reactivate. Select Turn on sound from the menu.
Method 2: Reactivate Instagram Profile Stories and Posts
Here are the steps for Android and iPhone.
Step 1: Open the Instagram profile that you have deactivated.
2nd step: Press the next button. A menu will open. Tap Mute.
Step 3: You will see toggles next to stories and messages. If a toggle is blue, it means the particular function is disabled. Turn off the switch next to Stories or Posts to turn the person’s audio back on.

Method 3: view all disabled accounts
This method is useful if you accidentally muted someone or want to unmute everyone you muted. Instead of checking profiles one by one, Instagram offers a dedicated setting to show all disabled accounts. You can then reactivate any profile.
Step 1: Go to your own Instagram profile and tap the three bar icon. Select Settings.
2nd step: Tap Privacy, then Mute Accounts.
Step 3: Here, you’ll see all of the disabled accounts along with information about whether you’ve disabled articles, posts, or both. Tap the profile you want to reactivate.
Step 4: You will be redirected to the profile screen for that account. Tap on Next as we did in the above method and tap on Mute. Turn off the toggle for stories or posts, as needed.

Method 4: reactivate the chat in Instagram direct messages (DM)
When you deactivate a conversation, you will not be notified of any new messages from that person. New messages will appear silently in your inbox. If you open your inbox, you can view and reply to messages. Likewise, you can also turn off video chats separately.
Now, to open chats or video chats, open your inbox on Instagram. You will see the list of conversations. Long press the account you want to reactivate. Tap Unmute messages or Unmute video chats.
Unmute or unsubscribe
Unmute offers a subtle way to avoid someone without confronting or informing them. There’s no way someone will know you’ve muted it. This is not the case with not following someone anymore. A person can easily tell whether you are following them or not. Learn more about what happens when you stop following someone on Instagram.
