How to add System Configuration (msconfig) to Control Panel

If you frequently use the control panel and the system configuration tool, how about adding the latter to the former? By modifying the Registry, you can add the system configuration to the control panel on Windows 10.

Microsoft has moved most of the functionality to Windows settings. However, the Control Panel is still an important part, and if you open it often on your computer, you should try adding more options to it. Instead of running msconfig via the Run prompt, you can add the same thing to the Control Panel.

The system configuration tool allows you to make changes such as Startup selection, Safe start, etc. As always, you should not forget to export the registry files and generate a system restore point before making any changes in the Registry Editor.

Add the system configuration tool to the control panel

Follow these steps to add the system configuration to the control panel in Windows 10:

  1. Open Notepad on your computer.
  2. Paste the registry values into it.
  3. Go to File> Save As.
  4. Select a path where you want to save the file.
  5. Name it with the extension .reg.
  6. To select All the files of Save as type
  7. Click it to save
  8. Double click on the file.
  9. To select Yes in the UAC prompt.
  10. To select Yes to complete the addition.

Let’s see these steps in detail.

At first, you need to create a .reg file with the appropriate registry values. To do this, open a Notepad window on your computer and pass the following texts-

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClassesCLSID{D14ED2E1-C75B-443c-BD7C-FC03B2F08C15}]
@="System Configuration"
"InfoTip"="Perform advanced troubleshooting and system configuration"
"System.ControlPanel.Category"="5"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClassesCLSID{D14ED2E1-C75B-443c-BD7C-FC03B2F08C15}DefaultIcon]
@="msconfig.exe"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClassesCLSID{D14ED2E1-C75B-443c-BD7C-FC03B2F08C15}ShellOpenCommand]
@="msconfig.exe"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerControlPanelNameSpace{D14ED2E1-C75B-443c-BD7C-FC03B2F08C15}]
@="System Configuration"

Now go to File and click on the Save as option. You can also press Ctrl + Shift + S simultaneously.

Then select a directory where you want to save the file, type a name with .reg extension, select All the files of Save as type drop-down list and then click on the to save button.

After that, you need to open this .reg file on your computer. To do this, locate the file and double-click it. You can find the UAC prompt. If yes, click on Yes and again the same button to include the registry values in the Registry Editor.

After that you can find the system configuration or the msconfig option in the control panel. In the case, you want to remove this option; you can navigate to this path in the Registry Editor-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClassesCLSID

And delete {D14ED2E1-C75B-443c-BD7C-FC03B2F08C15} key.

To do this, right click on this key, select Remove and click on the option Yes to confirm it.
