By default, the Hibernation file or hiberfile (C: hiberfil.sys) is 75% of the total amount of RAM installed on your Windows 10 computer. The quick start requires hibernation activation. If you only want to use Quick Start and do not plan to use Hibernate, you can specify the hiberfile file type as reduced to significantly reduce the size of the hibernation file (hiberfil.sys) to about half of its total size.
Hibernation mode is enabled by default in Windows 10. This mode is a power-saving state for battery-powered computers, eg. Lap, tops. Hibernate puts all the current status of your PC in the hiberfile file, then turns off your computer. Hibernate mode is slower than sleep mode, but consumes less power than sleep mode.
Hibernate file types
There are two types of Hibernate files:
- Full: The full hiberfile file type can enable hibernation and enable quick hibernation. It occupies about 75% of the total available RAM. The default size is 40% of physical memory. It supports hibernation, hybrid sleep and a quick start.
- Reduced: This type of hiberfile file enables quick start (hiberboot) without the need for hibernation. The reduced file type reduces the size of the hiberfile (C: hiberfil.sys) to about 50% of its total size. This command will remove Hibernate mode from your Power menu. The default size is 20% of physical memory. It supports quick start.
Specify the basic file file type as full or reduced
Open a command prompt with elevated privileges and follow these steps.
To specify the type of database file as "Full" in Windows 10:
Copy and paste the following command into the elevated command prompt, press Enter.:
powercfg /h /type full
To specify the type of fiberglass file as "Minimized" in Windows 10:
Copy and paste the following command into the elevated command prompt, press Enter.:
powercfg /h /type reduced
Note: If the hibernation file is set to a custom size greater than 40%, the command will return a message. The parameter is an incorrect error. You must first set the file size to zero with the command powercfg / h / size 0then restart the "reduced" command of the hibernation file type.
Once done, you can exit the elevated command prompt.
