iOS 14 adds a new standalone translator app. This stock application is able to recognize languages and translate speech in real time. But there is more. Safari can now also translate entire web pages.
The web page translation functionality is currently in beta testing.
A translation icon is displayed in the address field when you browse a web page compatible with this new translation option.
In these first steps, the supported languages are English, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, French, German, Russian and Brazilian Portuguese. At the time of writing, this new feature is only available in the United States and Canada. However, it should soon be extended to other regions. iOS 14 is expected to be released this fall.
How to translate a web page in Safari
1. Open Safari on your iPhone and iPad and load a webpage that is not in your native language.
2. Press the aA icon, available in the upper left corner of the Safari address bar.
3. A drop-down menu appears. Press the ‘Translate into [Language]’ option.
Fact: If the translate option is not available, that means either the website is not compatible with Safari’s new translate feature, or the feature itself is not yet available in your region!
4. Tap Enable translation, to confirm that you agree to the web page address and content being sent to Apple’s servers to complete the task.
How to revert to the original language
To revert to the original version of the web page, open the same drop-down menu and press See the original.
Fact: There is also a “Report a translation problem” option in case you want to edit an error.
How to activate more language options
The iOS 14 Safari webpage translation feature automatically offers translations for the languages defined in your list of preferred languages. You can edit this list and add other languages if needed.
