Sometimes, for no reason, the Start menu tiles in Windows 10 turn dark and shows a semi-transparent background. This behavior becomes visible when you hover your mouse cursor over a thumbnail. It can also happen randomly. You can try the following troubleshooting steps to fix the issue in Windows 10.

Initially, many users thought this was just a bug that will be fixed when reported. However, the problem persists. Here is what you can do!

  1. Restart the Start menu process.
  2. Detach and pin Tile.
  3. Update the graphics drivers.
  4. Run the DISM tool.
  5. Reset the affected Windows application.

Mosaic icons may also appear blurry or pixelated, or even completely dark.

Now there is a separate process available for the Start menu – StartMenuExperienceHost.exe. If the above solution does not give the desired results, you can try restarting the process from the Start menu to see if that fixes the problem.

2. Detach and pin the tile

The simplest solution that seems to work in most cases is unpinning and repining the tile. Click on the thumbnail that appears dark or blurry, right-click on it and select “Detach from the beginning“Option.
