Google Chrome is currently the most popular web browser with around 70% market share in the browser segment. Web technologies and websites are evolving gradually with a new set of problems that the vast majority of users face. Content is no longer limited to text only. Websites pushing videos, newsletters, creating a user’s email lists, following users with cookies, informing readers of new stories, etc. Almost everyone is bored and looking for ways to stop pop-ups in Chrome.
Meanwhile, Google continues to add new measures to Chrome to keep the web experience simple for the end user. Websites may want to push more content to the reader, but sometimes it gets crowded and the end user can be overwhelmed by forced irrelevant content.
You may have seen websites requesting notifications, automatically running videos at the bottom, pop-up cookies, notifications from other apps, and more.
Fortunately, Google Chrome has added the measures required to block these annoying ads and ads. In this article, we will guide you on the top five ways to stop pop-ups in Google Chrome on Windows and Mac.
1. Disable Chrome notifications on startup
When you install Google Chrome for the first time, it will ask for your permission to provide a notification on the Mac. If you mainly use Google Chrome for light web browsing, Reddit and YouTube, I strongly recommend that you turn off notifications from the start.
You can tap “Do not allow” notifications from the start to turn off Chrome notifications.
Note: If you are using services like WhatsApp or Messenger, I will not recommend disabling the notification from the start.
2. Disable pop-ups and redirects
When you visit a website, do you get unnecessary assistants, helpers or pop-ups? You can disable the behavior in the browser settings. Google Chrome also allows you to disable redirects from one website to another.
Follow the steps below to disable pop-ups and redirects
Step 1: Open Google Chrome on your Mac or Windows.
2nd step: Tap the three-button menu at the top and go to Settings.
Step 3: Go to Privacy & Security> Site Settings.
Step 4: It will open a Site Settings menu, scroll down to Permissions> Pop-ups and redirect option.
Step 5: Disable the Pop-ups and redirects option.
If desired, you can allow specific sites to allow pop-ups and redirects. I have authorized my local bank’s net banking website in the list. To view the reward points, it usually redirects me to the reward store.
3. Disable site notifications
You must have encountered a situation when a site asks you to send notifications in the future. If you accidentally press the Allow option, you will be notified of each publication that the website uploads and updates. It is certainly not an experience that a user is looking for while browsing the web.
You can respectfully refuse permission to notify. You can disable this behavior in Google Chrome settings. Follow the steps below to turn off site notification requests in the Google Chrome browser.
Step 1: Open Google Chrome and tap the three-dot menu at the top.
2nd step: Go to Privacy & Security> Site Settings> Notifications.
Step 3: In the side menu, deactivate the sites may request to send the notification option.
From now on, sites will not display the pop-up window to send you notifications.
4. Use guest mode or profile selector
I have encountered this situation so many times. This solution is especially useful for families using the single PC / Mac among the members. Let me reveal the scenario.
I share my Windows laptop with my brother. He uses Google apps like Google Docs and Google Drive on Google Chrome for personal stuff. When I use Google Chrome on the same PC, I occasionally receive Google Docs and Google Drive notifications from Doc comments or change permission notifications. In such cases, it is not advisable to deactivate notifications from this service.
To avoid such notification pop-ups, you must either use Guest mode or add another account in the Google Chrome browser.
You can tap the profile icon in the search bar and use Google Chrome as a guest. If you are a regular user, select add> write the account name, select the appropriate image. It will open a separate Google Chrome profile and ask you to sign in using Google account credentials.
From now on, you will no longer receive notifications from other people’s Google apps on Chrome.
5. Use an ad blocker
No amount of options in Google Chrome will block annoying auto video ads for you. You can opt for an ad blocker to restrict the delivery of these videos during your web viewing experience.
The media depend on advertising revenues to ensure the proper functioning of the site. While an ad blocker can improve your browsing experience, I highly recommend that you only block ads from sites that spam you with ads and videos on the web page.
You can access the Chrome web store and download any highly rated ad blocker to block video and pop-up ads.
Improve your Google Chrome experience
Instead of getting bored with pop-ups, you should use the solutions listed above to block the majority of them for a smooth web experience. Whenever I install Google Chrome, I turn off popups and redirect and notifications in the privacy menu.
