What is Samsung SmartTag

As stated earlier, Samsung SmartTag helps you find your lost items. This small device uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology to help you locate it. This scenario works as long as the tag is near your phone. Otherwise, the beacon uses other Galaxy smartphones to locate the SmartTag’s BLE signal, allowing you to retrieve your lost items.

SmartTag connects to the SmartThings app and SmartThings Find module on your Galaxy phone to connect and search. For the uninitiated, the SmartThings app is the hub of Samsung’s IoT and smart products like headphones, tags, other connected Galaxy phones, and more.

The best part about this tag is that you can also find your phone with it when linked. It has a button on the top that allows you to do the same. All you have to do is double tap. And the story does not end there. With the SmartTag, you can also control some compatible smart home devices.

The Control Things module works as IFFTT applets with connected devices performing a step when you press a button on your SmartTag. Cool, right?

Now that that’s fixed, let’s see how to use this SmartTag to help you locate lost items.

How to set up and use Samsung SmartTags

As previously stated, the SmartTag product works in tandem with the SmartThings app. To perform the initial setup, follow the steps below.

Step 1: Open the SmartThings app on your Galaxy phone and update the app if necessary. Next, hold the SmartTag near your phone and press the button in the center, and you will see a pop-up window on your phone.

Once completed, you will be able to see the status of the beacon on the SmartThings app. The app will show the status nearby when you are in the same location.

Using the tag is not rocket science. Whenever you need to locate a particular thing, hit the Show Map button and hit the Ring button. This will cause the beacon to make a series of high-pitched sounds, which will help you locate it. And guess what, you can even change the ringtone and volume of the beacon.

Again, if the label is far from where you are, you can either use the Navigate button to let the map navigate the steps to it. Note that the SmartThings Find module will only display the last known location on your map.

The advantage of the Find Near button is that it gives you an estimate of how close or far it is to the device. A full gauge means you’re near the beacon, and pressing the Ring button will do the trick. If you find that the device has a weaker signal, you will have to move around to see where it is.

This will ring your phone if it is nearby. Otherwise, it will work the same and use other Galaxy phones to locate it. Note that these phones will also need to have SmartThings installed.

To activate it, activate the button next to “Let beacon find you … button” and select your phone from the list.

Galaxy SmartTag limitations

For now, the Samsung SmartTag only works on Samsung Galaxy phones. So for this technology to work seamlessly in all locations, you will need other Galaxy smartphones.

So, if your partner or any other member of your house has an iPhone or any other Android phone, they won’t be able to use those phones to help you find your missing items. If you need to know, your phone can use other trackers (like the Tile Mate) in conjunction with other Androids.

Be smart

The SmartTag equipped with BLE is not the only tag available. The company has another ultra-broadband beacon that gives you a more precise location and doesn’t just rely on Bluetooth. However, they will be functional on Galaxy phones with UWB, such as the Galaxy S21.

So where do you plan to use the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag? We vote for wallets and car keys. What do you think?
