Smart speakers and assistants have become quite ubiquitous lately. With Google’s Nest speakers and Amazon’s Echo devices available at affordable price points, the usage of smart assistants has increased rapidly over the years. In contrast, they’re convenient, but the one aspect of smart speakers concerns users is privacy.

Smart speakers have microphones that are constantly active and waiting to hear the keyword. They also record and store your queries to improve accuracy. This may bother some users since the microphone can also capture any sensitive conversations when they’re close to the speaker. A good way to tackle this is to delete Alexa voice history from Echo devices.

If you use an Amazon Echo speaker, here’s how you can delete your Alexa voice history by following a few simple steps.

Why Should You Delete Your Alexa Voice History

Smart speakers learn from the interactions with you to give better answers to your queries over time. They learn your usage patterns and store relevant data. When you ask a query, the details of the query are stored on online servers under your account. Amazon uses this data to improve speech recognition and the accuracy of search results.

Given that an Amazon Echo speaker with Alexa, or just about any smart speaker, has an always-on mic, it can be a matter of concern if it records and stores private conversations. That can lead to targeted advertising and a breach of privacy. Thus, it’s a good idea to delete your Alexa voice history periodically.
