How to Disable Dark Mode in Chrome on Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS

Google Chrome is my default browser for all devices. I use it regularly to browse the internet. Recently, I turned on dark mode on Chromeaccidentally, which made the homepage, settings and a few other things in black. Disabling it was not an easy task. I have therefore thought that other people might also be wondering how to turn off the dark mode in Chrome. Therefore, this post.
Let's see how to make Chrome get rid of this darkness.
Disable dark mode in Google Chrome on Android
In Android Chrome Lollipop 5+, dark mode is active in three ways: application settings, theme settings for the entire system and battery saving mode. Here's how to disable it.
1. Change the chrome theme from dark to bright
In the first case, you must turn off the dark mode in the Chrome settings. Here are the steps for the same thing.
Step 1: Launch the Google Chrome app on your phone.
2nd step: Tap on the three-dot icon in the upper right corner and select Settings from the menu.

Step 3: Tap the themes in the Basics section. You will find three options: light, dark and default system. Press the light.

2. Change the theme of your Android phone to turn off the dark mode of Chrome
If you use Android 10+ with dark mode enabled on your phone, Chrome will automatically turn black if the Chrome theme setting is kept as the system default. Similarly, if the battery saver is enabled with the default system theme as the Chrome theme, then again, Chrome will become dark. So you need to turn off the dark mode on your phone or turn off battery saving mode.
To remove it from your phone, go to Phone Settings> Display. Disable the rocker next to the dark theme.
Point: You can also disable the dark theme from quick settings.

To turn off the battery saver, go to Phone Settings> Battery. Turn off the battery saver.

Disable dark mode in Google Chrome on iOS
Google Chrome does not have a dedicated theme setting on iPhones. The dark theme is related to the theme settings of your iPhone. If dark mode is enabled on your iPhone running iOS 13 and up, Chrome will become dark. Therefore, to remove the dark mode of Chrome on iOS, you must disable it in the settings of the iPhone.
To do this, open Settings on your iPhone and go to Display and Brightness.

Tap Light under the Appearance section to turn off the dark theme. Open Chrome and it will be normal again. Check out our dedicated guide to disable the dark theme on iPhone and iPad.
Point: Disable the button next to the Auto Theme setting. Otherwise, your phone will automatically become black at some point.

Disable Dark Mode for Chrome on Windows 10
In Windows 10, Google Chrome goes dark in two ways: using system settings and applying the black theme. Here we will tell you how to disable both.
1. Disable Dark Chrome Mode from Windows Settings
Windows 10 supports dark mode for applications. This means that supported applications become dark when this setting is enabled. You must disable it to remove the dark mode from Chrome on Windows. To do this, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open the settings on your Windows 10 PC and go to Personalization.

2nd step: Click Colors in the left sidebar.

Step 3: In the color settings, select Light under "Choose your color". This will cause the applications and your Windows to turn on.

However, if you only want applications to turn on without changing the Windows theme, select Customize under Choose your color. Then check the box next to Light under "Choose your default application mode". Keep the "Choose your default Windows mode" option according to your preferences. Open Chrome and it will become lightweight.

2. Disable Dark Mode from Chrome Themes
A few months ago, Google launched new themes for Chrome. One of them, Just Black, makes some of your things darker than Chrome. So, to remove the dark mode, you have to disable the black theme.
To do this, follow these steps:
Step 1: Launch Chrome and click on the three-dot icon in the upper right corner. Select Settings in the menu. You can also use the chrome: // settings / direct link to open the settings.

2nd step: Scroll down and you'll find themes under the Appearance section. Click Reset to default. This will restore the theme in the original light version.

Disable dark mode for Chrome on Mac
Similar to Windows, the dark theme on Chrome in macOS is related to the dark theme setting applied to the entire system on devices running macOS 10.14 Mojave +. So you have to change the theme of your Mac to turn off the dark mode on Chrome.
To do this, follow these steps:
Step 1: Click the Apple menu and select System Preferences from the menu.

2nd step: Click General under System Preferences.

Step 3: There are three options next to Appearance: light, dark and automatic. Click Light to turn off the dark mode. This will change the theme not only for Chrome but for your entire Mac.
If you choose Auto (available on macOS Catalina), the dark theme will be activated automatically at night. Learn in detail how to disable dark mode on macOS.

Can not disable dark mode on Chrome
If, after following the steps above, you are unable to remove the dark mode on Chrome, check out these tips:
1. Disable incognito mode
Private browsing mode is dark by default. You must therefore check whether you are browsing in normal or incognito mode. For this, look for the icon incognito, consisting of glasses and a hat.

On the desk, you will find it in the upper right corner. If you are in incognito mode, close the window and open Chrome again in normal mode.

On Chrome mobile apps (Android and iPhone), the incognito mode icon is present to the left of the address bar. If you see it, close the tab and launch the normal tabs. Learn in detail how to disable incognito Chrome mode on various platforms.

2. Restore Chrome Settings
On the Chrome desktop, you can reset Chrome settings to turn off the dark mode. Resetting Chrome settings will not delete your data, history, or favorites. Only extensions and themes will be disabled. Find out what happens when you reset the Chrome settings before performing this step.
To reset Chrome settings, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open the Chrome settings by clicking on the three-dot icon in the upper right corner.

2nd step: Click Advanced to view more settings.

Step 3: Go down at the bottom of the page. Click 'Restore Defaults.' Then click Reset Settings to confirm.

Remove dark mode in Chrome only

However, as you've seen, you also need to disable system settings on some devices to remove it from Chrome. If you do not want to, learn how to turn off dark mode on Chrome only on Windows and macOS.
