How to enable legacy Search Box in File Explorer of Windows 10

Enable legacy Search Box in File Explorer

Despite a better and more compatible connection between the file explorer and the taskbar, many users have not appreciated the modified behavior of the search area of the file explorer in Windows 10. The major drawback of the new updated search box is to block the addressing of the search suggestion from the drop-down menu that appeared in Legacy File Explorer.

Due to this issue, users are unable to use the search utility properly because there is nothing matching the search when entering a keyword. So, if you are one of them who prefers to go back to the old experience of the search area, read on.

In this article, we offer a third-party application that will bring back the classic experience of the search box in the file explorer. And, this only applies to Windows 10 version 1909 or later.

Activate the inherited search area in the file explorer

To activate the search function inherited from the file explorer, you must download the zip folder which corresponds to your type of system in the computer specifications. To do this, you must first check the system architecture of your Windows 10 PC found in Windows Settings> System> About. After getting information about your system architecture, you should follow the suggestions.

Before you begin, first create a system restore point.

Go to Github website and download the latest mach2 zip file for your Windows 10 PC. Please note that your antivirus software may display a warning and that you may need to add it to the exceptions.

Open the file explorer (Win + E) and navigate to the Downloads folder where the zip file is downloaded.

Right click on the zip file and select Extract all in the context menu.

In a new window, click on the Extract button.

Copy the path of the extracted folder.

Now open the command prompt with administrative rights.

At the elevated command prompt, run the following command:

cd C:THE FOLDER PATH

Note: When typing the command line at the command prompt, be sure to change the path to C: THE FILE PATH .

Again, type the following command –

mach2 disable 18755234

Press the Enter key to activate the old search area in the file explorer.

Restart your computer for these changes to take effect.

After correctly completing the above steps, you will now get the old search box experience in your file explorer which would be available in the upper right corner.

However, if you want to switch to the updated File Explorer and want to bring the new search box back to your Explorer window. In this case, type the following command and press Enter –

mach2 enable 18755234

That’s it
