How to Install tvOS 16 Public Beta on Apple TV

Apple has released the tvOS 16 Public Beta build number 20J5328g. Now you can easily install it on an Apple TV 4K or HD model and experience the new features and improvements. However, be aware that test builds can be buggy and unstable.

To be able to download this test version on Apple TV, you must log in with the same Apple ID that you used to register on the Apple Beta Software Program platform!

Assuming you already have iOS 16 Public Beta or macOS Ventura Public Beta installed, use the same Apple ID to connect to your Apple TV as shown below:

  • Open Settings -> Users and Accounts.
  • Select your [user name]below Default user.
  • Make sure at least one of Apple Store, iCloud, iTunes or Game Center is using the above mentioned Apple ID.

  • 1. Opt for Settings -> System -> Software Update.
  • 2. Enable Get Public Beta Updates and follow the onscreen prompts to enroll your Apple TV. Confirm by selecting Get beta updates once again.
  • 3. Accept Apple’s Legal Terms after reviewing them.
  • 4. Apple TV automatically checks for an available beta update. tvOS 16.0 (20J5328g) should appear on the screen. Select Download and install.
  • Point: Be patient until the software update is downloaded and installed on your device. Apple TV will automatically restart when finished.

tvOS 16 public beta not available?

Are you getting the tvOS 15.6 Beta update instead of tvOS 16.0 on the Apple TV update screen? It happened to us too.

To fix: We managed to troubleshoot it by restarting the Apple TV in Settings -> System -> Restart. After reboot, go back to Settings -> System -> Software Update. Round Get beta updates Off and then go back on. tvOS 16.0 Public Beta should be available now!

Apple unveiled tvOS 16 during the WWDC 2022 keynote. We’ve covered some of the new features in our Developer Beta review.

  • Inter-device connectivity better integrates Apple TV with more iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch apps.
  • Material support allows Apple TV to work with other compatible smart home accessories across multiple platforms, including Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa and others.

    Important: A home hub is required to control Matter accessories in the Home app and only Apple TV or HomePod can get this role. Both devices need to be updated to tvOS 16 or HomePod 16.

  • Improve game controller support is available in tvOS 16, including Bluetooth controllers like Nintendo’s Joy-Cons and Pro.
  • Multi-user functionality for Apple TV app accounts is new in tvOS 16. This improves user profile integration. Security is provided by a shared keychain, and users will no longer need to log in and choose a profile each time they launch an app like Netflix.
