How to Remove Linked Accounts From Google Home
Recently, Google Assistant showed me an order on my phone that I had never asked. It scared me. A little digging revealed that my account was linked to my brother’s Google Home device which was miles away. The account was linked when I was in the same location as Google Home. I had no idea that changing the Wi-Fi connection or even a state would not affect accounts associated with Google Home. So I deleted the Google Home device from my Google account. In this article, we will show how to remove associated accounts from Google Home speakers such as Home Mini.
Several Google Home users are sailing on the same boat. For example, someone connected their Google account to a friend’s Home speaker or a family member’s account to Google Home. Likewise, the account of an ex-partner would be linked to Google Home. The problem is, all linked accounts can see the search history for orders made on Google Home. It is important to delete these linked accounts to protect privacy.
We’ll walk you through how to remove accounts linked as the primary owner from Google Home. Also learn how to opt out of someone else’s Google Home.
How to remove linked accounts from your Google Home
When you are the primary owner of the Google Home device, use one of the following methods to remove other linked accounts from your Google Home speaker.
Method 1: remove additional linked accounts
Step 1: Open the Google Home app on your phone. Tap the profile picture icon in the top right corner. If no profile picture is set, you will see your name initials. Tap the icon.
2nd step: Tap Assistant Settings.
Step 3: Go to the Assistant tab. Scroll down and tap on your Google Home device. In my case, it’s My mini.
Step 4: Tap Linked Accounts. Tap the X mark next to the Google account you want to delete. And, if you don’t see the X mark, long press the account name. Then tap the delete icon or the X mark, depending on the option available. Confirm on the next screen.
Pro tip: In your Google Home settings, tap Remove Voice Match and select the person you want to remove.
Method 2: remove the member from the home
Step 1: Open the Google Home app. Tap on the profile picture icon, like we did in the method above. Access the wizard settings.
2nd step: Go to the Home tab. Tap House Members.
Step 3: Long press on the member you want to remove. Tap the delete icon.
You can access the above screen by tapping the Settings icon on the Google Home homepage. Then tap Household and delete the members.
Note: When you remove a member, they will be notified and will not have access to Google Home services.
Method 3: Delete the house
After removing members, if they can still issue commands or control your devices for some inexplicable reason, you should remove your home. Each home in the Google Home app has multiple members, devices, and rooms. You can add or remove members, as we saw above. But if that doesn’t work, delete the house and set up your house again, adding only the members who should be able to use your Google Home.
To delete a house, launch the Google Home app. Tap the Settings icon on the Home screen. Tap Remove this house.
You can also access the Assistant settings from the profile picture. Touch the Home tab> Your home. Tap Remove this house.
Note: You can delete a house if you are the only member of the household. If there are other members, delete them first. Otherwise, you will only opt out yourself. Others would still have access to the house.
Bonus: access Assistant settings from the Google app
Google continues to change the location of settings in Google Home. Previously, you could access it from the hamburger (three bar icon) on the left side of the app. Now they are buried under the profile picture icon. So in case Google changes the location of the settings again, you can also open the Google Assistant settings from the Google app.
Here are the steps:
Step 1: Launch the Google app on your phone. In the Google app, tap on the More option.
2nd step: Go to settings and then to the Google Assistant.
Step 3: You will reach the same screen that we saw in the methods above.
