How to stop Outlook from saving copies of emails in the Sent Items folder

If you want to prevent Outlook from saving copies of messages in the Sent Items folder, here’s how.

Prevent Outlook from saving sent items

Many people find it convenient to have a history of emails saved as ‘Sent elements’In Outlook. In case it is necessary to access an old email, you can simply go to this folder to check the emails they sent and take the necessary action.

The downside of this feature, however, is that it starts to save all emails sent to Outlook without discrimination.

Prevent Outlook from saving copies of emails sent through its settings

You can prevent Outlook from saving copies of email messages to the Sent Items folder through its settings, Group Policy, or the Registry Editor. Here’s how. If you want to change this setting, follow the instructions below.

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook
  2. Word Access Options Dialog Box
  3. Go to the Mail tab
  4. Uncheck “Save copies of messages in Sent Items folder”

After sending an email using Microsoft Outlook, a copy of the email is saved in the Sent Items folder.

Launch the Microsoft Outlook app by typing Outlook in the search bar or simply clicking its icon in the Windows 10 taskbar.

When the Options dialog opens, switch to the ‘MailThe “tab.

4]Uncheck “Save copies of messages in Sent Items folder”

In the right pane of the Options dialog box, go to ‘Save messages‘section.

There, look for ‘Save copies of messages in the Sent Items folder“.

Now just uncheck the box marked with this option to prevent Outlook from saving copies of messages in the Sent Items folder.

Prevent Outlook from saving sent items using GPEDIT

Open the Group Policy Editor and access the following setting:

User Configuration> Administrative Templates> Microsoft Outlook 2016> Outlook Options> Preferences> Mail Options

Double click on Save copies of messages in the Save Items folder.

Check the Enabled box, then select Save copies of messages in the Sent Items folder.

Prevent Outlook from saving sent items using REGEDIT

Open Registry Editor and access the following keys:

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Office 16.0 Outlook Preferences
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Policies Microsoft Office 16.0 Outlook Preferences

For Outlook 2016, Outlook for Office 365 and Outlook 2019, the version number will be 16.0.

Create a DWORD value name and name it SaveSent. Give it a value as follows:

  • 0 = Sent emails will not be saved in the Sent Items folder.
  • 1 = Sent emails will be saved in the Sent Items folder.
