Voicemail is a convenient service that ensures that you never miss an important message, even when you can’t answer calls. Without it, it’s not clear how many important messages you would miss. If you are having issues with voicemail on your iPhone, you may need to resolve it on your own.
There can be many reasons why voicemail is not working on iPhone, ranging from a network issue to incorrectly configuring settings. That is why we have prepared a guide that presents all the possible solutions, from the simplest to the most demanding. Let’s take a look at this.
1. Check if voicemail is activated
First of all, you need to make sure that voicemail is enabled on your iPhone, especially if you’ve recently changed carriers or reset your iPhone. To do this, open the Phone app and switch to the Voicemail tab. If you haven’t enabled voicemail, you’ll see a Configure Now button. Tap it and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.
2. Restart the Phone application
If voicemail is not working due to a minor app glitch, you can try restarting the Phone app on your iPhone. To do this, bring up the app switcher by swiping your finger from the bottom of the screen (or double-tapping the Home screen button). Find the Phone app and swipe up to close it.
Now relaunch the app and see if the voicemail is working properly now.
3. Activate / deactivate airplane mode
If restarting the phone app doesn’t help, you can try toggling Airplane mode. Usually, this troubleshooting method will help resolve minor network connection issues that are causing the problem.
Swipe down from the top right corner of your iPhone to bring up the Control Center. Tap the Airplane mode icon to turn it on. Wait a minute or two and then turn it off. Go ahead and see if voicemail is working now.
4. Check voicemail manually
Sometimes problems with your carrier’s voicemail server can make you believe that there are issues with your iPhone. To check this, you can try calling your voicemail directly.
Open the Phone app and go to the Keyboard tab. Press and hold 1 and check your voicemail. If there is no problem, you will hear voicemail.
5. Check the voicemail greeting.
Then you need to check the voicemail greeting set on your iPhone. If you haven’t set your personalized greeting correctly, callers may not recognize it and leave a message.
Read on to learn how to check voicemail greetings on your iPhone.
Step 1: Launch the Phone app on your iPhone, switch to the Voicemail tab and tap on Greetings at the top left.
2nd step: On the Greetings screen, preview your personalized greeting using the Play button.
Step 3: If you are not satisfied, edit it using the Save button. Or, set it to Default and tap Save.
6. Check if call forwarding is deactivated
Another reason you might not receive voicemail messages is that your calls are set to be redirected to another phone number. To turn off call forwarding on iPhone, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Open Settings and go to Phone.
2nd step: Under Calls, tap Call forwarding and turn it off.
7. Install pending operator updates
Mobile operators also update their settings from time to time. Ideally, these updates are automatically installed in the background. But if for some reason the update was not completed, you can manually install those pending updates by following the steps below.
Step 1: Launch the Settings app on your iPhone, tap General, then tap About.
2nd step: If there are any pending updates, you will see a pop-up window. Tap Update to continue.
8. Reset network settings
Finally, if all else fails, you can try resetting network settings on your iPhone. This will restore all network settings to their default values and should permanently resolve voicemail issues.
Step 1: Open the settings on your iPhone and go to General. Scroll down to tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
2nd step: Tap the Reset option at the bottom and choose Reset Network Settings from the resulting menu.
It will ask you for the lock screen password. Once verified, tap on the Reset network settings confirmation box to begin the restore process
