The drag-and-drop feature of Windows 10 lets you move or copy files or folders from one location to another. If, for any reason, it stops working, it becomes difficult to perform some of the main tasks. If you can not drag files or folders into Windows 10, here's what you need to do to solve the problem.
Can not drag and drop files or folders in Windows 10
If you can not drag files and folders into Windows 10, try the following suggestions:
- Press the Esc key and see
- Troubleshoot in a clean boot state
- Change the height and width of the slide
- Disable the user account control with the help of the registry.
Let's see these suggestions in detail.
1) Press the Esc key to view
One of the users of our forum reported that pressing the ESC key before dragging and dropping solves the problem. In his case, it seemed like an application in the background was blocking the drag and drop. Press the Esc button to release this lock.
You can click on any file with the left mouse button and keep the button pressed. Then press the Esc key.
The solution is known to solve the problem of the drag and drop function of Windows. Do it for the file / folder you want to move on the computer.
Then you have to check all the applications in the background. If they are linked to the keyboard or shortcut keys, you may need to remove or disable it.
2) Troubleshoot in minimal mode
Perform a clean boot and check again if the problem is resolved or persists. If this is the case, a startup program interferes with the proper functioning of Windows. In the clean boot state, try to identify the culprit and disable it or remove it.
3) Change the height and width of the trail
Open the registry editor and go to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER Control Panel Desktop
On the right pane, choose to change both DragHeight and DragWidth values.
Change the value to a very large number. Do it, say, 50.
These values are only the size in pixels for drag and drop. Increasing the size could help.
4) Disable user account control with the help of the registry
If you can not drag files or folders, editing this registry key can also help you. Open regedit and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Policies System
Change the value of EnableLUA from 1 to 0.
This disables the user account control and so can only be a temporary measure.
If none of these solutions help you, you can run the System File Checker and DISM in one click, using our Ultimate Windows Tweaker freeware.
We hope these tips were easy to follow and that you could enable drag and drop in Windows 10.
