How to Remove Managed By Your Organization in Chrome on Mac

Google Chrome updates happen quite often, and it’s wise to let this happen automatically on your Mac. Usually anyone would let Chrome update and continue browsing. Many Chrome users have complained that they noticed an odd message saying “Managed by your organization” in the Chrome settings menu. Everyone’s first reflex is to understand how to remove “Managed by your organization” from Chrome.

When I saw this message in Chrome on my Mac, I was puzzled because it is not part of any corporate network. This led me into the rabbit hole to find ways to get rid of it. Random reset and reinstall of Chrome could not delete the message. However, I followed these solutions, which helped me remove “Managed by your organization” in Chrome on Mac.

Why does Chrome display the message “Managed by your organization”

The Google Chrome 73 browser update introduced the message “Managed by your organization” in the menu for all platforms.

There can only be three reasons why Chrome shows you this message on your Mac:

  • Your Chrome is managed by your organization.
  • Malware, adware, or an app has blocked an unknown policy or profile in Chrome.
  • You have enabled or disabled specific features such as incognito mode, guest mode or others.

Enter chrome: // management in Chrome and you should see a message – Your browser is managed. This confirms a management policy for Chrome. Fortunately, there are a few solutions to completely get rid of this annoying message. Let’s start.

Check for malware or adware

The first step is to check if malware or adware has infected your Mac. It’s just sticking to the basics and making sure no other software or adware is causing a problem.

Remove Chrome Message Malwarebytes Scan 2

We recommend that you use the Malwarebytes app to scan Chrome and the rest of your Mac for malware, malware, adware, or malware.

Make sure to quit all other applications and services when running Malwarebytes scan.

Once the scan is complete, the application indicates whether your Mac contains malware. If there are, you can quarantine them or delete them all. If no adware or malware infects your system, you should check the following solution.

Remove Chrome policies on Mac

If your Mac is provided / owned by your organization, the IT administrator can use a few policies to manage Chrome settings for all employees. This policy could be as harmless as disabling private browsing in Chrome on Mac and Windows. In addition, third-party software may have discreetly installed a strategy to track your online activities. If Malwarebytes has successfully removed or failed to display successful results, you should then correct the Chrome policies.

Point: Check out our guide on how to always launch Chrome in incognito mode.

You need to follow the steps below to remove these policies from your Mac.

Step 1: Launch Chrome and type chrome: // policy in the address bar.

2nd step: Check if there are any policies listed under the Chrome Policies header. On my Mac, Chrome had the “IncognitoModeAvailable” policy listed with a policy value of 1 – that means it is active. If the value of the strategy is 0, it means that the strategy is inactive, but the provision to activate it exists.

Step 3: Launch the Terminal application. You can press the Command + Space shortcut to launch Spotlight, type Terminal in the search bar, then press Enter to start the application.

Step 4: Make sure you’ve quit Chrome. Then use the default tool command in Terminal to delete the respective policy.

In my case, I used the following command and hit enter:

defaults delete com.google.Chrome IncognitoModeAvailability
Delete orders from the terminal Managed by organization Chrome Mac 5

This should remove the IncognitoModeAvailable policy, as shown in step 2.

defaults delete com.google.Chrome [policy name]

Use the exact policy name instead of the square brackets indicated in the command above.

Reset Google Chrome

After removing any suspicious policies, you need to reset the Chrome settings to the default.

Step 1: Type chrome: // settings in the address bar and scroll down on this page to click Advanced at the bottom.

You can also delete all navigation data from the chrome menu: // settings / privacy. After that, quit Chrome and restart it. You can also uninstall and reinstall Chrome on your Mac just for your reason. It wouldn’t make much difference, but you try it.

This should prevent Chrome from displaying the “Managed by your organization” message on Mac.
