The range of Microsoft Surface devices is impressive and it is a clear sign that Microsoft knows how to create very good laptops that can compete with the biggest players in the market. However, problems arise from time to time. A few days ago, we encountered a situation where some users have problems with the brightness keys on the Surface device. Apparently, the brightness keys do not work when they are pressed (F1 and F2). You see, the indicator appears indicating that the brightness level is increasing and decreasing, but that does not actually happen.
Now, we think that this problem has everything to do with the driver, therefore, we will focus first on the main patches, then on some secondary if it does not work.
The brightness buttons on the surface do not work
If the Surface Book, Laptop, or Pro Brightness buttons do not work as expected, try the following suggestions:
- Uninstall and reinstall the graphics card driver
- Run the hardware and device troubleshooting utility
- Update drivers and firmware
- Reset your Surface device.
1) Uninstall the graphics card driver
OK, the first thing we need to do here is to uninstall the display driver on your Surface device. To do this, we must venture into the Device Manager, which is super easy to do. Just go to the search box and enter Device Manager.
Once it appears, simply click on it, and then access the graphics card. After doing all this, select Display Adapter, then right-click Intel Graphic UHD 620, and then Uninstall.
Finally, restart the Surface device and it should automatically reinstall the driver.
2) Run the hardware and peripherals troubleshooting utility
To run the hardware and device troubleshooting utility, you will need to use the command line. To call the troubleshooter, simply run the command prompt, type or copy and paste the command below and press enter.
msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic
At the end, restart your Surface device and check if the keys are working properly.
3) Update drivers and firmware
You will need to ensure that all of your Surface drivers, software, and firmware are fully updated to the latest versions. Finally, restart your computer twice to complete the changes.
4) Reset your Surface device
OK, so it's very easy to reset Surface. Just go to Start> Settings> Update & Security> Recovery.
In the section that says Reset this PC, please select Start and follow the instructions from there and you should be fine.
