If you encounter a problem with a Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter sure Windows 10In this article, we provide some troubleshooting steps to help you troubleshoot. You may be experiencing issues that prevent you from logging in, running, appearing, or not having a sound.
Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter does not work
Before you begin, connect the adapter to an HDMI port on your HDTV, monitor, or projector and to a USB charging port. The adapter is powered by the USB charging port.
For best performance, keep your device within a 23 feet HDTV, monitor or projector. To connect the adapter to your HDTV, your monitor, or your projector, refer to the product guide for the type of adapter you have, as shown below. The adapter can only be connected to one HDTV, monitor or projector at a time.
The Microsoft Wireless Display Card (with the Microsoft Four Square logo) is supported on some Android devices. If you need additional help for projection from your Android or other device, check the manufacturer's website for your device.
The Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter application must be in the foreground on your device when installing firmware updates. Suspending the application will also suspend the update or may cause it to fail.
Open the Wireless Display Adapter application and connect your adapter. Select Firmware in the left side of the navigation pane of the application and you will get the details to update the firmware.
The problem (s) you may encounter with the adapter may vary among others, as follows:
- Problems with the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter application.
- The display is not scaled, or some parts of the display are missing.
- Problems with video or audio playback
- Can not connect your device to the adapter.
Now let's go to the detailed troubleshooting steps.
1) Problems with the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter application
Here are some things to try.

If the message "You are not logged in" appears in the application:
- Make sure the HDMI and USB ends of the adapter are connected to your HDTV, monitor or projector.
- In the application, select Refresh.
B) The application always displays "Waiting for connection"
If the application still displays "Waiting for connection", first make sure your device is connected to the adapter, then disconnect the adapter and reconnect it.
Here's how:
- Swipe from the right edge of the screen or select Action Center in the taskbar.
- To select Connect. The adapter will appear at the top of the menu. (If the adapter does not appear at the top, your device is not connected to the adapter.)
- Select the name of the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter and select Disconnect.
- Swipe from the right edge of the screen or select Action Center.
- To select Connectand in the list of views, select the name of the Microsoft wireless display card to reconnect your device to the card.
The adapter will not work if you use a proxy server to access the Internet.
2) The display is not scaled or some parts of the display are missing.
If part of the screen of your device does not appear on your second screen, the display may not be scaled. Try these solutions:
A) Adjust the resolution on your device
If you have set the resolution of your device to a resolution lower than the default one, you can increase it to fit properly to your second screen.
Here's how:
- In the search box on the taskbar, type screen resolutionthen select Change the resolution of the screen results.
- Under Resolution, click on the chevron of the drop-down menu, then select the resolution advisable. The highest resolution is the recommended resolution on the device.
B) Use the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter application to adjust the display settings
You can use the adapter application to change the way the screen of your device adapts to that of your HDTV, monitor or projector.
Here's how:
- Open the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter application.
- Under Adjust the display, drag the slider to the right until you see everything on your device on the HDTV, monitor, or projector.
3) Problems with video or audio playback
Here are some solutions to try:
A) Nothing is displayed on the second screen
If you can connect your device to the adapter but nothing is displayed on your second screen, try following the steps in solution 4) below. If that does not solve the problem, try these solutions:
- Make sure your device is set to duplicate or enlarge the screen.
- Unplug the USB end of the adapter to turn it off, then reconnect it to turn it back on.
- Make sure your HDTV, monitor or projector is set to the HDMI channel. To check or change the video input settings on your screen, refer to the product guide supplied with your device or go to the manufacturer's website.
- Make sure your HDTV, monitor or projector supports HDCP. If you are unsure whether your display supports HDCP, refer to the product guide that came with your device or go to the manufacturer's website.
B) Video is rasterized or audio players
If you notice a pixelation in the video or if the audio stutters, follow these steps:
- Move your device closer to the adapter. For optimal performance, your device should be within 10 meters of your HDTV, monitor, or projector.
- Keep the adapter away from microwave ovens, cordless phones, and baby monitors. Common household electronic devices such as these may cause radio frequency interference that may disrupt the connection between your device and the adapter.
- If you do not have enough room to connect the adapter to the HDMI port on your second display, use the HDMI extension cable included in the box that came with your adapter. If you have plugged the adapter into the HDMI angle port, this may cause problems with the video quality.
C) Application-based video (YouTube, Netflix, Amazon) can not be played until it is connected to the wireless display adapter
If you're having trouble playing videos and content from an application service such as Netflix, YouTube, or Amazon Instant Video, follow these steps:
- Make sure the adapter is up to date. Refer to the Microsoft guide provided above.
- Close and restart or refresh the application.
- Disconnect from the wireless display adapter.
- Restart the device.
- Reconnect to the adapter and start playing the video again.
D) The video is played on your device but is frozen on your second screen.
If the video is playing correctly on your device but is frozen on your second screen, disconnect the adapter from your device and screen and then reconnect it.
Here's how:
- Slide your finger from the right edge of the screen or select the action center in the taskbar.
- To select Connect, select the name of the Microsoft wireless display card, and then select Disconnect.
- Unplug both ends of the adapter from your HDTV, monitor or projector and plug them back in again.
- Swipe from the right edge of the screen or select the center of the action.
- To select Connectand in the list of views, select the name of the Microsoft wireless display card to reconnect your device to the card.
E) Poor video quality
If the quality of streaming video is poor, here are some ways to improve it:
- Make sure you do not use an HDMI to VGA converter. Converting HDMI to VGA reduces the signal strength of the video output and can distort images.
- Reduce radio frequency interference by moving the adapter away from microwave ovens, cordless phones, and other common home electronics.
- Move your device closer to the adapter. The adapter works best when it is within 23 feet of your device.
- Download top quality videos. The source itself may be of poor quality, which will affect the quality of streaming video.
F) The video is played on the connected screen, but the audio comes from your device.
- In the search box on the taskbar, type sound, then select Sound results.
- To select Reading > Speakers / Intel WiDi > Define by default > D & #39; agreement.
G) Can not change the resolution on your device
If the resolution of your HDTV, monitor or projector is lower than 1080p, your device will default to this resolution while it is connected to the display.
You need an HDTV, monitor, or projector that supports up to 1080p resolution to stream content from your device in this resolution. Once you have disconnected your device from the adapter, your device will regain its default resolution.
4) Can not connect your device to the adapter
