How to Share Screen on Google Meet and Other Tricks

Video conferencing applications such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Skype, etc. are experiencing an increase in demand. Besides video calls, screen sharing is also one of the sought-after features. Google gets on the train with Google Meet and makes it free for everyone. Google Meet comes with an easy to use interface, the ability to share the screen and various extensions that enhance the capabilities of Google Meet.

The sharing screen is probably one of the most important features of Google Meet. While working at home, you may need someone to help you with the problems. You can launch Google Meet, call your seniors, and share the screen for advice. You can also use the Whiteboard function for better understanding.

In this article, we will explain how to use screen sharing on Google Meet and how you can use certain extensions to improve the sharing capabilities of Google Meet.

Share the screen on Google Meet

Unfortunately, Google Meet’s screen sharing ability is limited to the current screen or to open windows in the background. The software cannot share iPhone / iPad screen, share files directly from cloud storage services, etc. Follow the steps below to share the screen on Google Meet.

Step 1: Open Google Meet on the web.

2nd step: Enter a meeting code to join a meeting in progress or use the “Start a meeting” option.

Step 3: Here you have two options. You can either create a meeting or use the “Present” button to start screen sharing directly.

Step 4: Select Join Now and the interface will dial Google Meet group calls. Tap the meeting details tab and select “Copy Attendance Information”. You can share the link with others to let them join the meeting.

Step 5: Tap the member’s tab at the top to make sure everyone has joined the meeting.

Pro tip: You can tap the three-dot menu at the bottom and select the grid view to fit everyone on one screen.

Step 6: Tap on the “Present Now” option at the bottom and you have two options – Your entire screen or window.

Step 7: Select an option and click “Share”. Google Meet will start screen sharing with participants.

You will see a small toolbar suggesting that screen sharing is currently enabled. You can hide it or use the toolbar to stop sharing.

Unfortunately, Google Meet does not offer any additional functions for annotations. In addition, you cannot use the whiteboard functionality provided by Zoom and Microsoft Teams.

There is a workaround here. Google Meet is a web service. You can still use Chrome online store extensions to enhance Google Meet functionality. One of these extensions is Google Meet Plus.

Use the whiteboard in Google Meet

Google Meet Plus is an essential extension for all Google Meet users. The extension allows many features not found in Google Meet software. We will use the Google Meet Plus extension to add essential features such as whiteboard, push to talk, emoji reactions, etc. in the software.

First, you need to download the Google Meet Plus extension from the Chrome store.

The next time you use the Google Meet service, the extension will activate the toolbar in the upper left corner.

You can tap the whiteboard icon to activate the software functionality. Remember to start with screen sharing to allow attendees to view your current display.

The list of functions offered by Google Meet Plus Whiteboard:

  • Pencil
  • Shapes such as Rectangle, Circle, Elipse, Line
  • Text
  • Gum

You can use these editing tools and present the subject in detail to the participants. As for the text, you can change the font style, size and change the intensity of the border of these shapes.

After brainstorming ideas on the whiteboard, you can download the whiteboard image for later use. Other functions of Google Meet Plus include the possibility of using emoji reactions, a built-in timer to keep track of a meeting in progress, a mute button, etc.

Chat during screen sharing

This is useful when you want to have a conversation during screen sharing. Participants may have doubts about what you explain about screen sharing. They can use the chat menu to ask questions. The administrator can view the current conversation in the chat menu and manage the screen sharing process accordingly.

When the screen sharing process is in progress, you can just tap the chat icon in the upper right corner and have a conversation with the team.
