After a service request, you must configure your Surface device, install updates, restore your files, and reinstall your applications. In this article, we describe the easy steps to quickly get your Windows 10-Powered Area device ready to operate in no time, once you have recovered from the repair or service center, in order to resume your most important work.
Configure your Surface device after repair
You can configure your surface in just 5 steps, as follows in this particular order:
- Turn on your Surface and complete the configuration.
- Install the updates.
- Pair your Bluetooth accessories.
- Restore your files.
- Reinstall your applications.
Now let's go to the details.
1) Turn on your Surface and complete the configuration.
Here you will have to use the same Microsoft account you used on your original Surface device. This allows you to access the same settings, your calendar, your contacts, and your e-mail.
2) Install the updates.
Once the configuration is complete, install the latest updates for your Surface and Windows.
To check for updates, follow these steps:
Move towards Settings > Update and security > Windows Update. Then click Check for updates.
After you install the available updates, restart your Surface device, and then check for updates again. Repeat this process until there are no more updates.
Also update your Microsoft Store application. For that, proceed as following:
- Select the beginning button and then select Microsoft Store.
- Select the Profile or More (Ellipsis), then select Downloads and updatess.
- Choose the Microsoft Store Update and select Download now.
3) Pair your Bluetooth accessories.

4) Restore your files.
Here you will need to add the files you previously saved.

If you have saved your files on OneDrive, you can access them at any time.
You can also restore files with file history or file explorer. Using the File Explorer, you can copy files manually to your Documents, Videos, Pictures, and Music libraries from another storage location.
5) Reinstall your applications.
When you recover your Surface device from a service or repair center, you will need to reinstall your Windows applications and other software, such as Microsoft Office.
To reinstall Windows applications, follow these steps:
- Select the beginning button and then select Microsoft Store.
- To select More menu and then select My library.
- Choose the applications or games you want to install and select Download.
Reinstall Microsoft Office:
Reinstall any other third-party application or program:
- Install any other programs you have used by visiting the software developer's site or installing it from the program DVD you purchased.
