In today's publication, we will describe how you can quickly and easily configure the Surface Slim Pen – a redesigned, refillable pen that provides a natural writing and drawing experience for your Surface devices.
Surface Slim Pen is Microsoft's latest and greatest stylus technology – built into wireless charging and better compatibility for the new Surface Pro X. If you don't care about wireless charging (with Surface Pro X) or a built-in rechargeable battery, then the classic Surface Pen is an appropriate option.

The numbers in the image above indicate the following:
- Eraser and top button
- LED light
- Right click and select button
- Pen tip
Pairing the Slim Pen with your Surface device
You must charge your pen before using it.
You can do this by placing the pen in the storage tray of one of the accessories that came with the pen – the Signature Surface Pro X keyboard or the USB-C charging base – for 1 second. When you're ready, use Bluetooth to pair your Slim Pen with a Surface.
Here's how:
- To select beginning > settings > features > Add Bluetooth or another device > Bluetooth.
- Press and hold the top button of your stylus for 5 to 7 seconds until the LED indicator flashes white to activate the Bluetooth pairing mode.
- To select Surface Slim Pen to pair your pen.
If you have a Surface Pro X, you can automatically connect your pen to it in two ways.
Here's how:
- Place your pen in the storage tray of a Signature Surface Pro X keyboard, and then remove it.
- Use SwiftPair to automatically connect your Slim Pen. You can do this by simply writing on the Surface screen with your stylus. A setup experience will appear and help you customize your pen.

Charging your Surface Slim pen
To use your pen for the first time, you must charge it for 1 second to wake it up.
You can charge the Surface Slim Pen with any of the accessories that came with it – Signature Surface Pro X keyboard where the USB-C charging base.
The LED light on your pen can tell you when to charge the battery and more. Consult the table below to understand the meaning of each light state and the measures to be taken.
When the light is | It means |
Flashing white after holding the upper button for 5 seconds. | Your stylus is in pairing mode and you can pair it with your Surface. |
Solid white after your selected pair on your Surface. | Your stylus has been successfully paired with your Surface. |
Fades in and out of white when placed in your keyboard's storage tray or charging base. | Your pen is docked and will recharge if necessary. |
Fade in and out amber. | Your pen's battery is low. |
